The word author is inside authority 👀

You already know that — it’s probably part of why you wrote the book.

What’s worth knowing is that design is what makes that authority visible. A book that looks self-published in the wrong way hands your reader a reason to doubt you before they’ve started chapter one.

You wouldn’t train for a marathon and walk the last kilometre. The manuscript was the hard part. Don’t let the design be where you cut corners.

This is an investment in how seriously the world takes you. And Shelf Published is done-for-you book design for women who didn’t write something this good just to have it undersold by the cover.

Mother’s Day has me thinking about the women who’ve shaped me, and how many of them did it without ever sitting across from me. Through a book they wrote and published, at a moment when I needed it most.

Women have always changed each other’s lives through story. The ones who wrote it down and published it get to do that across time zones, decades, and rooms they’ll never physically enter.

A well-designed book is how your words travel further than you ever could — the difference between a manuscript sitting on a hard drive and a book sitting on someone’s nightstand, getting dog-eared, getting passed to a friend, getting credited as the reason someone finally made the call.

Your story already has that potential. The design is what makes it credible enough for a stranger to pick up and trust.

That’s exactly what Shelf Published is for.

If you call it research for work, it’s tax deductible right? Asking for a friend 😂

New series where I chat about the two things that I love - design and books!

In today’s episode I’m chatting about my favourite, less often used text alignment (in books at least) - LEFT ALIGNMENT. Otherwise known as ragged right. It’s gripping stuff here folks 🤪

If you enjoy hearing me wax lyrical about books and the design which makes them… feel free to drop me a little ❤️

Readers decide in three seconds. Your book cover needs to be ready.

Not by looking pretty, by doing a job. Understanding the genre conventions so your book earns its place on the right shelf. Hinting at the story, the mood, the themes — just enough to create intrigue without giving the whole thing away. And using colour, typography, and imagery to make the right reader think this is for me before they've even clocked the title.

That's shelf appeal. And it's not luck — it's a formula.

Swipe to see how it works, and what breaks when one piece is missing.

Please don’t say this to a book designer 😭

24/04/2026

Four books out in 2026. Three full designs, one cover design only. And every single one landed exactly where it should: in readers’ hands, looking like it belongs there.

Just because you don’t have a book deal doesn’t mean your book isn’t a big deal.

Shelf Published is my done-for-you design experience for self-publishing authors — covering book design, author brand identity, and website, so everything works together and nothing looks like you pieced it together yourself.

I’m currently taking new enquiries. If you’re ready to turn your manuscript into something your industry can’t ignore, the link’s in my bio.

And if you’re still in the planning stages — my Self-Publishing Roadmap is a free guide to getting your book shelf-ready without the guesswork. DM me GUIDE and I’ll send it straight to you.

A little behind-the-scenes fact about my work that many people don’t know…

Between branding projects and book design, I also work with quite a few environmental organisations, conservation groups and community projects.

Over the last few years I’ve helped design reports, booklets, campaign materials and publications that support the work these groups are doing out in the field.

If you’re someone I chat to regularly, you’ll know this particular project has been affectionately referred to as “the lizard booklet.” 🦎

It was designed in collaboration with Deborah Metters for a project focused on restoring habitat for the Collared Delma — a tiny threatened legless lizard found in south-east Queensland. The booklet helps landholders understand how to manage habitat for the species on their properties.

Honestly, I love this work.

Give me all the long-form editorial design — the kind where we take complex information, research and strategy and turn it into something clear, engaging and actually enjoyable to read.

Because the work these organisations are doing really matters. Good design just helps make sure the message lands and the impact is seen.

If you work in comms, conservation or a community organisation and need a comms designer to help bring your work to life, feel free to get in touch 🤓

I thought it would be a fun creative exercise to brainstorm what kind of book Pedro Pascal would write.

Naturally, I designed a 320-page charcoal linen coffee table book in my head. High contrast typography, editorial-style layouts and stunning photography...of Pedro.

Working title: ALLY
A Study in the Power of Modern Masculinity.

Foreword by Oscar Isaac. Obviously.
Photographed in Rome, New York & That One Red Carpet Where He Broke the Internet.

And then I realised… I wasn’t imagining what book Pedro would write.

I was imagining the book I would write.

Because what fascinates me isn’t just the fashion or the movies or the biceps.

It’s his beautiful kind of masculinity:

– feels safe to women
– champions minorities
– doesn’t dominate to feel powerful
– embraces softness without apology
– uses influence for good
– has excellent fashion sense
– funny, cheeky, not afraid to look silly
– unashamed of his need for 6 shots of espresso in the morning

Quiet. Confident. No alpha male bro vibes. A friend to women.

Anyway look this is obviously a pipe dream but I think we can all agree we’d like a copy of this on our coffee tables, no?

But also… this is how a book designer brain thinks.

We don’t just see people.
We see legacy.
We see influence.
We see the story that deserves permanence.

And nothing says permanence like print.
And the tattoo I’m planning…. 🤣

Nightingale Studios wasn’t just ready for a visual refresh. It was ready for clearer positioning.

In a market shaped by large vocal academies on one end and performance-first teachers on the other, Vivienne’s work sits somewhere far more intentional: classically grounded technique, delivered in a deeply personalised, warm studio environment.

The rebrand focused on making that distinction visible. Refinement and structure to reflect serious, sustainable training. Warmth, texture and expressive illustration to honour the joy and vulnerability of singing. Brand photography (📸 by ) that builds trust and shows the safety and connection felt inside the studio.

Every element works together to communicate exactly what Nightingale Studios stands for: confident singers built on strong technical foundations, supported with care.

As part of the project, we created a new online home for the studio. Expanding from a one-page Canva site into a five-page fully-custom WordPress website and blog designed for growth. A new digital hub designed to represent the brand with credibility, build trust, attract aligned students, and support existing clients through streamlined bookings and newsletter opt-ins.

An exciting new chapter begins for .studios - I can’t wait to see where they go next! 💖

If you business is stuck in your low-rise jeans era, where the branding that got you started no longer represents where you are now, let’s chat! I have availability for one brand in March/April - head to my website or send me a DM to start chatting x
