ASGA - Australian Sign & Graphics Association The Australian Sign & Graphics Association is the peak body representing Signmakers, Sign Installers

For over forty years, the Australian Sign & Graphics Association has been the representative body for the sign and graphics industry in Australia. It covers the whole spectrum of signmakers, sign installers, signwriters, graphic designers, sign educators and apprentices, as well as sign industry suppliers. The ASGA encourages the highest standards from its members and seeks to enhance the professionalism within the industry. It believes its policy of quality and commitment to the customer is not only in the best interest of its members, but also provides a safeguard for their clients. The Association provides its members with continued support and technical information through sourcing significant benefits for them. The ASGA has been a leader in helping to reshape educational training courses and to encourage sign industry educational training centres around Australia. The ASGA promotes the Letterheads movement, values its involvement in Sign Industry EXPO’s throughout Australia, hosts National Conferences with the Visual Industry Suppliers Association (VISA), and liaises closely with the New Zealand Sign and Display Association (NZSDA). The ASGA members and their clients are offered a nationwide professional sign service that is guaranteed, so that corporate clients can be assured of a high standard of craftsmanship throughout the country.

Licensing requirements for signage installation professionals are strict and can vary from State to State, but with hefty penalties for those who don’t comply with requirements, it’s vital to know what building licenses you need. It was fantastic to welcome expert Charl Taylor from CI-Advantage to the stand on the Thursday morning of the recent Visual Impct Expo in Sydney, to provide some important guidance for anyone installing signage, or overseeing its installation. Those who missed out can find State-specific information prepared by Charl by logging in to the Member area of the ASGA website and selecting ‘Webinar Recordings’ from the menu to hear an earlier session on the topic.

On Day 2 of the recent Visual Impact Expo in Sydney, we welcomed Brad Turpin Jnr from the International Sign Association (ISA) via live-cross, talking with ASGA Member & Events Manager, Damian Nielsen, about ISA's training resources. More than 60 online courses are now available to ASGA Members through our reciprocal partnership with the US-based association, with Brad saying the ability to refresh, reskill and upskill staff is invaluable, and ISA plans to keep expanding the range of options available in future. Sincere thanks to Brad for making time to take part despite the time differences! Find out more and see the entire course list available to ASGA Members at https://signs.org.au/isa-courses/

Associations like ASGA are not just the people you see standing on a stage, or sitting on a National Executive. A lot of the important work happens quietly in the background, and it relies on people being prepared to put their hand up, give their time and get involved when the industry needs them. Fran Thorne has done that for a very long time. That's just part of what ASGA President, Mick Harrold, said at the ASGA's 2026 Easy Signs National Sign & Graphics Awards, in presenting Fran Thorne with a Life Membership recognising years of dedication and contribution to the industry. Fran and husband Lindsay, owners of Magnum Signs in Gisborne, Victoria, are pictured here - what a team! Congratulations Fran!

There's nothing more important to the future of our sector than apprenticeships, so it was great to welcome Anthony Bitler from BuildSkills to the ASGA stand at Visual Impact Expo in Sydney a couple of weeks ago, to discuss the latest collaborations between government, training organisations and industry to determine the future of apprenticeships in our sector and ensure qualifications and training are changing to meet the needs of our ever-evolving industry. ASGA has been involved in discussions about the structure and content of the Certificate III in Sign & Graphics over the past few months, alongside representatives from BuildSkills, the printing sector and others.

A remarkable career was recognised last week when Vernon Kingman was inducted as a Life Member of ASGA. In presenting the Awards, ASGA Vice President Damian Nielsen, said Vernon is "a man whose work ethic, craftsmanship, and leadership helped shape the modern identity of our sector. The 2026 Easy Signs National Sign & Graphics Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on Thursday 3 September was a glittering showcase of achievement and a fitting celebration of our diverse and dynamic industry. Comedian Dave O'Neill compered with his trademark blend of warmth and humour, overseeing the presentation of the awards while more than 270 guests enjoyed a gourmet three-course meal. Huge thanks to Diamond Sponsor Easy Signs, Gold Sponsors Avery Dennison, ORAFOL and Spandex, and Bronze Sponsors Currie Group, HP, Pozitive and SMIB for making the event possible, and to Visual Connections for organising the Awards event. Over 100 of the crowd also continued the celebrations at the After Party at the nearby Locker Room, which was generously sponsored by Vanguard Durst, Signageworld and Inbrandigo.
