If you have a TVC you can't just put this on Facebook and expect it to do well.

Content is consumed differently on different platforms and devices.

People consume video with the sound off on mobile in most cases. They need to be engaged quickly. And you can retarget them with different content depending on how much of your video they watched.

In this graphic from Facebook the green line represents a typical story arc of a TVC while the white line represents mobile “drop-off” behavior. If your main message/product is at the end, who’s going to know?

While the message needs to align with your overall campaign, it's important to design content specifically for the platform and device that people will be consuming it from.

How to develop your social media strategy.

{ Reading through articles I published almost 7 years ago... amazing how they are still true! Social media tools change, but the principles STAY. THE. SAME! :) Megan }

Social media should be used to enhance and reinforce your marketing plan; social media should not be seen as a side project or separate ‘thing’. Too often social media is isolated from the business. If used correctly social media can play a huge role in achieving your marketing objectives.

Start from the beginning, which is your business plan, then your marketing plan. Look at your individual marketing objectives then work backwards to determine your social strategy. You will then be able to work out what kind of social media platform (i.e. Facebook, twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn) will work best for you, and also what campaign will help you achieve your marketing goals.

Look at linking social media to your other marketing efforts. For example, use your electronic newsletter to tell people about your Facebook campaign, or use twitter to promote your website campaign. Everything should be linked; this way you will be utilising all the available tools to achieve your marketing goals, and essentially your business goals.

Here's my top 5 tips:

1. Start with your business plan, then marketing plan, then your social media plan
2. Choose the platform/s that will work best for you (Facebook, twitter, YouTube, etc)
3. Create a campaign that will help achieve your marketing objectives
4. Link your social strategy to other elements in your marketing (newsletter, brochure, in store signage, etc)
5. Don’t expect social media will achieve fantastic results if you isolate it and don’t include it as part of your marketing plan.

When looking at your Social Media strategy, it can help to approach it in three phases:

1. Connection
2. Engagement
3. Monetization

In the connection phase you want to build up your social media presence. In this phase the focus is on getting quality fans, followers, connections, etc. Quality being the operative word here, more on this later.

The engagement phase this is where your brand engages with your audience, and visa versa. This is where you generate comments, shares, likes, recommendations, ReTweets, etc.

The monetization phase is where you qualify your fans as leads and/or direct people to spend money with you in the form of a sale.

Most people skip straight to the monetization phase, and wonder why social media is not working for them. Phase one and two are just as important as phase three.

Remember, you don’t ask someone to marry you on the first date… do you?
