Keep 4 cut 4: Branding Edition

Every beauty brand on earth buys media. This one bought architects instead. 200+ stores, no two the same, and not a single billboard in 35 years.
L’Oréal paid USD 2.525 billion for it in 2023. The most they’ve ever spent on anything.
The room was the ad and the customers did the media buy.

ANZ is running a billboard advertising that their branches are open on Saturday. That’s the whole ad.

It works because the biggest pain point in banking isn’t rates or app features, it’s not being able to speak to a person. As the population ages and people grow warier of technology, simply being reachable becomes a real competitive advantage.

Sometimes marketing doesn’t have to be clever. Sometimes you just have to say you’re open.

In 1996 two brands dominated the sports world, and a 24-year-old with no money was never going to out-spend either.

What he had was a hatred for the soaked cotton t-shirt he’d worn under his pads for four years of college football.

With that as motive, he made one that wicks instead of soaks, worked out of his grandmother’s basement, and sold it from the boot of his car. And eighteen years later he’d knocked Adidas off No.2 in America.

In the early 1960s, one American giant owns about 70% of the razor market, and the whole thing rests on a quiet fact. Its blades go blunt after a few shaves, so you keep buying more. It already has the tech for a blade that lasts far longer, but won’t touch it.
Then a British firm that’s been forging steel since the 1700s, swords, bayonets, garden shears, turns its metalwork on the razor blade. They coat a stainless edge that holds for weeks. It doesn’t even sell it in the usual shops, word gets out anyway, demand goes berserk, and they can’t make them fast enough.
The giant’s share tumbles and it’s forced to rush out the very blade it had been sitting on for years.

One of the most loved toy companies on earth was losing close to a million dollars a day.

The fix wasn’t a new idea, it was culling almost half of their 13,000 different pieces.

Ten years later it was the biggest toy company in the world.

When you’re in trouble, the instinct is to add more. Sometimes the answer is subtraction.

In 1960s New York, a couple losing shelf space to the big ice cream companies made a strange bet: instead of cutting the price, they doubled the cream, took out the air, and charged more than anyone in the freezer aisle. Then they gave it a name in a language nobody speaks. Two invented words, chosen purely because they looked expensive and foreign.

In 1889, in Nice, An Austrian businessman races cars under a fake name. His ten-year-old daughter’s nickname.

In March 1900, his driver is killed on the first bend at La Turbie. The car was too tall, too heavy at the front.

Three days later he orders 36 cars from a German factory. 550,000 gold marks. Lower, longer, built to his spec.

One condition. The model carries the girl’s name.
It won everything and by 1902 the factory had trademarked the name.

Now, her name is on three million cars a year.
