The Power of Digital Marketing for SMBs - Pt 4 Google My Business

Continuing from the last post - next up on the page when someone is searching for a product or service locally - Google My Business! πŸ’―

This is definitely an area that a lot of local SMBs are prioritising in 2023. So it's clear businesses know the value of GMB for boosting local visibility - it's now the first organic search result displayed on the page for most searches where local businesses are displayed! And even better if you can make it work the traffic from GMB is free!

But how should local businesses make the most of GMB? Creating a GMB listing is a start...but is not enough. This is how Google determines local rankings.

"Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. A combination of these factors helps us find the best match for your search.

Relevance - how well a local Business Profile matches what someone is searching for.

Distance - how far each potential search result is from the location term used in a search.

Prominence - information that Google has about a business, from across the web, like links, articles, and directories. Google review count and review score factor into local search ranking."

πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”

Understanding the above is key for optimising a GMB profile and improving the results in this space.

To get you started here are some of the ways you can optimise your GMB listing.

βœ… Complete your profile: Include your business name, address, phone number, website, operating hours, and business category. make sure to include all service detail and available information and regularly ensure this is up to date!

βœ… Add Photos: Showcase your products, services, team, and storefront. Photos make your listing more engaging and give customers a feel for your business.

βœ… Collect and Respond to Reviews: Encourage your happy customers to leave reviews. And respond to all reviews, good or bad. It shows you value customer feedback and care about their experience. For the good reviews - often if you don't ask you don't get so make this happen!

βœ… Use the Posts Feature: Share updates, offers, and news directly on your Google My Business listing. I say use the GMB profile like a social media platform. Customers won't use it the same as they will FB for instance but each post is an opportunity to share with users (and Google) more and more about your business and hopefully the keywords you want to be prominently displayed for locally!

This isn't everything. But it's a great start for most local businesses! Share your thoughts in the comments below! 😎

The Power of Digital Marketing for SMBs - Pt 3 Google (And Bing!) Ads.

Previously I wrote about Google at a high level. Now I want to try to share some insights for local businesses who want to look at the core areas of search engines and leverage this space for more online outcomes.

Let's start where a lot of potential customers start... at the top of the page, by looking at Google (and Bing!) Ads. πŸŽ―πŸ’Ό

We know the ideal value of search engine marketing (pull marketing).
1. Customer is looking for a product or service!
2. Customer hops onto Google and searches for it!
3. Your business appears here top of the page!
4. Customer goes to your site and engages!

Seems simple. Using PPC ads correctly can make it simple. These ads are regularly proven successful for a lot of the businesses I work with.

With the right strategy, these ads can and should be;

1️⃣ Creating Immediate Visibility for your brand: paying for placement at the top of search results = Instant spotlight, instant visibility.

2️⃣ Focusing on Targeted Reach: You can target your audience based on location, demographics, and even the time of the day. Relevance is vital.

3️⃣ Cost-Effective: SEM ads work as a Pay-Per-Click form of marketing, so you only pay when someone clicks on your ad. The budget is then based on your unique business and goals. "How much traffic do I need to generate to make a measurable difference?"

4️⃣ Providing Measurable Results: You can track everything. This makes it easier to tweak your strategies and get the most out of your ads - i.e. optimise towards conversions not just clicks.

If the above is executed correctly this presents a great opportunity to drive outcomes from the paid-on-page results and get found right place right time.

"But I don't click on the ads section." This makes some users sceptical of ads and the potential outcomes. While this may be the case individually these ads are a massive part of Google's $224.47 billion revenue in 2022. Ads are a massive reason Google is a multi-billion dollar business - and the improved experience here makes more users click on ads every year! More people are clicking on ads than ever before - and this is only going to increase.

The advantage of the ad results really comes from the ability to appear instantly rather than waiting a lengthy optimisation period before your business is visible. And with the right strategy is a functional and scalable way to grow online outcomes for your business.

Keep in mind the above for Google advertising & don't forget about Bing! While Google's search volume is hard to beat, don't underestimate Bing Ads as a way to reach another audience, plus it often comes at a lower cost per click!

The Power of Digital Marketing for SMBs - Pt 2 Google & Search Engine Marketing

Thought it would be best to properly kick off this series with what I talk about most often with local business owners ... GOOGLE! 😎 Again bear with me here - I'm not a writer - just a guy that talks about marketing a lot!

Search engines (organic and paid marketing options) are a core element for the majority of the businesses I speak to - and that's because no other solutions really provide the same opportunity to position a business in front of someone as they are actively taking time out of their day to look for a product or service!

Nerds like me call that ' '

For anyone not convinced... (it's 2023 is there anyone that doesn't want to get their brand on search engines! πŸ€”) here are some stats from 2023 - sorry I'll talk about you in a later post but everyone knows Google gets the lion's share of searches in Australia especially so.

🀯 Google processes over 99,000 searches every second.
🀯 84% of people search Google 3 times a day or more.
🀯 Almost half 46% of all product searches begin on Google.

The searches are there and people are looking online for products and services. So then it's just about looking at ways to make sure your business is able to appear - right place right time.

That's where we can look at SEM (PPC Ads), SEO & GMB in efforts to position local brands right place right time. I'll do more of a deep dive post into each of these areas next week. But if your business doesn't appear when you search online locally here what steps are you taking to make that happen? If you feel like having a chat specifically for your business in this area send me a message.

The Power of Digital Marketing for SMBs - sharing from my LinkedIn for those who don't follow me there.

***

Over the coming weeks, I am going to be putting more tailored content out here to my network to share valuable insights and opportunities for local businesses to learn and grow in this space. I'll do my best, but go easy on me, I'm not a writer! πŸ˜‚

Before going into specific marketing topics I thought the first thing to share would be - why you should care about ???? πŸŒπŸš€

In my role working with QLD businesses on their marketing strategies, I have seen first-hand how much a well-structured digital marketing strategy can impact a business. It is a major part of growing business in 2023 and presents so many opportunities for local businesses of all shapes and sizes.

πŸ’Ό Traditional marketing has always been a one-way conversation. With businesses spending big $$$ to broadcast their messages to customers. The hope is to reach enough people that you will find some looking to buy your products or engage with your services.

πŸ’» πŸ“± Digital presents much more opportunities for business. With the right strategy, you can achieve the same as traditional marketing - reach a hell of a lot of people, more cost-effectively. And with the added advantage you can reach who you want to reach and when you want to reach them. Instead of the every "Tom, Dick and Harry approach."

Digital also presents the opportunity for so much more. It presents the opportunity for businesses to connect with customers directly answering questions and engaging in real time.

It presents the opportunity to reach people as they are looking for a specific product or service. And makes it simple to stay in front of these people while they are considering their purchase.

And probably the best part: πŸ’‘ Digital marketing allows your local business to compete on the same playing field as larger corporations, at a fraction of the cost - if you have the right strategy and setup for your marketing campaigns.

As a local digital marketer, I’m excited to kick off and put some effort into some more content here instead of exclusively resharing what ReachLocal Australia & New Zealand posts!

I will do my best to dive deep into digital marketing strategies and share insights and details that can help local businesses get more from their online marketing in 2023.

Do me a favour if you like this share it. πŸ’―

I always try to ask before meeting a new business for the first time what their key competitors in the market are so I can do some research and look for areas of opportunity when presenting ideas for an improved marketing strategy.

Constantly local businesses are not giving their competitors much thought - but this is a valuable opportunity to identify ways to stand out in the local market and identify what may be working for your competitors in the marketing space.

Check out our recent blog post for some guidance on why it's important to identify your competitors and how to go about doing this.
