The Power of Digital Marketing for SMBs - Pt 4 Google My Business
Continuing from the last post - next up on the page when someone is searching for a product or service locally - Google My Business! π―
This is definitely an area that a lot of local SMBs are prioritising in 2023. So it's clear businesses know the value of GMB for boosting local visibility - it's now the first organic search result displayed on the page for most searches where local businesses are displayed! And even better if you can make it work the traffic from GMB is free!
But how should local businesses make the most of GMB? Creating a GMB listing is a start...but is not enough. This is how Google determines local rankings.
"Local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. A combination of these factors helps us find the best match for your search.
Relevance - how well a local Business Profile matches what someone is searching for.
Distance - how far each potential search result is from the location term used in a search.
Prominence - information that Google has about a business, from across the web, like links, articles, and directories. Google review count and review score factor into local search ranking."

Understanding the above is key for optimising a GMB profile and improving the results in this space.
To get you started here are some of the ways you can optimise your GMB listing.
β
Complete your profile: Include your business name, address, phone number, website, operating hours, and business category. make sure to include all service detail and available information and regularly ensure this is up to date!
β
Add Photos: Showcase your products, services, team, and storefront. Photos make your listing more engaging and give customers a feel for your business.
β
Collect and Respond to Reviews: Encourage your happy customers to leave reviews. And respond to all reviews, good or bad. It shows you value customer feedback and care about their experience. For the good reviews - often if you don't ask you don't get so make this happen!
β
Use the Posts Feature: Share updates, offers, and news directly on your Google My Business listing. I say use the GMB profile like a social media platform. Customers won't use it the same as they will FB for instance but each post is an opportunity to share with users (and Google) more and more about your business and hopefully the keywords you want to be prominently displayed for locally!
This isn't everything. But it's a great start for most local businesses! Share your thoughts in the comments below! π
