One of the great parts of researching a story are the little details you can unearth that add nuance and depth to the story or a character. Reading a book on combat psychology, I discovered that one of the characteristics of elite soldiers is their ability to maintain a 'peak' heart rate during times of stress. Above this peak rate, decision making can decline rapidly, despite years of training.

This detail translated into the protagonist's heart rate displayed on a smart watch, sound design revealing the calm, steady beat as he makes first contact with the enemy.

Hours of smart watch display design, motion tracking and heart beat sound effects later and I've arrived at a result that feels about right.

Hopefully someone will appreciate the detail in this 3 second shot...

When I drove from WA to Queensland (because it's almost impossible to get blank-fire machine guns in WA) I really should have spent more time making sure I had every single frame of the storyboard locked.

While a lot of the shots are an exact match, there are sequences in the trailer that have gaps because I didn't plan it out properly.

Great road trip though and a fantastic experience working with armourers and stunt choreographers. The important lesson...plan more!
