Email marketing can feel frustrating sometimes, right? You spend hours crafting the perfect message, but when it lands in someone’s inbox, the open rates are low and engagement is underwhelming.
If that sounds familiar, I get it. Most of the time, it’s your subject line that’s letting you down. The first few words in the inbox are what decide whether someone clicks or scrolls past.
Done well, email can be one of your most engaged and highest-converting channels. And it all starts with a subject line that stands out and sparks curiosity.
Here are some strategies I use to craft email subject lines that actually get opened:
Keep it short – 40 characters or fewer ensures readability on mobile.
Personalise it – Use names, past behaviour, or preferences to make emails feel tailored.
Be clear – Clever wordplay is fun, but clarity drives opens.
Spark curiosity – Tease the benefit, but don’t overshare.
Use action words – Verbs like discover, grab, unlock, save, and get to motivate engagement.
Emojis – One ☕️ or 🎉 can make your subject line stand out, but too many can feel spammy.
A/B test – Test different lengths, tones, and personalisation to see what resonates with your audience.
Writing email subject lines that get high open rates is both an art and a science. It’s about striking a balance between curiosity, clarity, and understanding your audience.
