Being online is not the same as being ready for customers

A basic website can put your business online, but a useful website is built around the customer’s decision. It considers what someone needs to understand before they call, book or send an enquiry.

For a new business, that usually means being clear about the service, the type of customer you help, the area you work in and what happens next. If the website leaves people guessing, many will simply move on. They may not call to clarify. They may not send a message to ask. They will often choose the business that was easier to understand.

This is why templates can be a problem. Many early websites are built around a layout first, then the business is squeezed into it. The result can look presentable but still feel thin. The words do not quite fit. The pages do not explain enough. The calls to action feel generic. The business ends up with a website, but not one that is doing much useful work.

A better website starts with the business and the customer, then the design follows.

When Meta cuts you off, what happens to your business?

An accountant named Miriam Holme recently shared confronting screenshots showing a network of Facebook and Instagram accounts being disabled. Personal accounts. Business accounts. Meta Connected accounts. The message was blunt. The accounts were disabled, the decision was final and the content would eventually be deleted.

The details of what happened will probably be argued for weeks. Meta may have made a mistake. There may be information the public cannot see.

So many business owners reacted to the story, because they saw the risk for themselves immediately.

When a small business owner says, “I’ll just do the website myself”, it’s usually rational. Budgets matter. Time is tight. DIY websites feel like the fastest path to something live.

So let’s treat this like a business decision, not a design debate. DIY websites are absolutely possible to build. However, the real question is what it costs to make one work properly, keep it working, and avoid paying twice.

Domain Name Scans - protect yourself

The email looks official. The subject line says your domain is about to expire. It has your business name, the right logo, and a link that says Renew now to avoid disruption. You are in the middle of a busy day, so you click. That is exactly what the scammer wants.

December is prime time for domain scams. Business owners are distracted, teams are on leave, and inboxes fill with reminders. Scammers copy real notifications and send them when you are least likely to double-check. One careless click can hand over your login, your payment details, or even your domain name itself.

A few summers ago, a local service business rang us in a panic. Their website had vanished, their emails had stopped, and their booking system was offline. They assumed it was a server problem. It wasn’t. Their domain - the very name their customers typed every day - wasn’t in their name at all.

It had been registered years earlier by a well-meaning contractor. The registration email went to an old address, the renewal notice was missed, and another party picked it up. Overnight, their identity online simply disappeared.

When websites fail, it’s rarely out of nowhere. There’s usually a trail of small clues that went unnoticed: an image that took too long to load, a plugin that needed updating, a form that stopped sending messages months ago. Each one seemed too small to matter until one day it wasn’t.

This isn’t bad luck. It’s drift. The slow slide from “working fine” to “what just happened?”. The good news is that you can stop drift with just a little structure.

Imagine this. You’re working through your inbox on a Friday afternoon when an email catches your eye. It looks official. The logo matches, the language feels right and it says your domain will be suspended unless you act today. It even lists your real domain name. You pause for a moment, hovering over the link, wondering if it’s real.

This is how good phishing scams work. They don’t scream for attention; they copy the tone and timing of real communication. They use publicly available information, like your domain and expiry date, to build something convincing. It isn’t spam in the old sense. It’s a mirror of the real thing, designed to find you when you’re busy and least likely to question it.
