Most people prepare their communications in the wrong way.

They start with the who, what, when and where. Who is it aimed at? What are we saying/ doing? When is it happening? Where is it happening?

Don’t do that!

Instead, start with your organisation’s values.

Values can help you decide both WHY and HOW you are communicating and these are much more important questions.

If you stick close to your values, your communications will deliver on your big picture drivers: why you exist (strategic) and how you behave (culture).

And that will help you achieve your mission and safeguard your culture way better than a load of whos, whats, whens and wheres.

I had a terrific time last Saturday, delivering training for the Tasmanian Leaders Program (TLP).

We spent three hours together in the Hobart Town Hall learning how to prepare for presentations and public speaking, and how to feel more confident in delivering them.

I also gave the group some tips on how to deliver an ad hoc speech with no preparation and how to answer questions for better results.

The current TLP cohort is impressive. A very connected, passionate, engaged and intelligent group of leaders. As a trainer, it doesn’t get much better.

I went through TLP back in 2018 and it changed my life. No exaggeration. I left my unsatisfying job and started my own values-based communications business, Leigh Arnold Communications.

So for the past seven years, I’ve been working exclusively with values-based clients on meaningful projects that make Tasmania a better place. It’s such a joy. I love this work.

And TLP played a huge role in giving me the courage and tools to make that change in my professional life.

Hobart is a delightful place to work. Today I delivered internal communications training in the Treasury building on Murray Street, for the Department of Treasury and Finance.

The complex is made up of numerous heritage-listed buildings including the oldest Supreme Court in Australia, built in 1824.

The people who work for Treasury are charming too. So polite and thoughtful. And very punctual (which I love).
