Monotone Art Printers

Monotone Art Printers At Monotone, our mission is simple: create high quality print work for our clients, on time and to budget.

Colour, black & white, digital, specialty finishes and much more. We do this everyday – for businesses and individuals – and we’ve been doing it for over 100 years. From our origins as a small black and white printery in 1913, Monotone has evolved into a technically advanced, full service commercial printer. Our people are highly skilled, working with state of the art equipment to produce award winning work – crafted with the same skill and attention to detail as our predecessors.

We, as a company, wouldn’t exist without paper — and we respect it.

At Monotone Printers, paper is more than just a material — it’s the foundation of everything we do. From ideas and designs to finished prints, paper brings messages to life and helps businesses connect with people in meaningful ways.

Every sheet tells a story, and we’re proud to be part of that journey. Thank you to the timeless medium that continues to make creativity, communication, and print possible.

Paper and packaging do more than protect products — they tell a story.

From first impressions on the shelf to what customers take home, quality paper packaging builds trust, strengthens brands, and creates a tangible connection. When sourced responsibly and designed thoughtfully, it’s also an envirnmental choice that supports a sustainable future.

Good packaging isn’t just seen — it’s felt.

Paper often raises environmental questions, and as a printing company, we believe it’s important to share the facts. Paper comes from trees, which are a renewable resource when forests are responsibly managed. Today, most commercial paper is sourced from certified suppliers who replant trees and protect forest ecosystems.

Paper is also one of the most recycled materials in the world. By choosing recycled or responsibly sourced paper and recycling after use, customers help support a circular system where materials are reused rather than wasted.

Modern printing has made significant environmental improvements, using more efficient equipment, reducing waste, and lowering energy and water consumption. When used thoughtfully, paper remains a practical, effective, and environmentally responsible way to communicate, package, and promote products.

Digital communication has changed the way businesses share information — offering speed, flexibility, and convenience. But print remains essential for impact, trust, and connection. From marketing materials to packaging and signage, paper delivers a tangible experience that electronic communication simply can’t replace.

At the same time, modern printing has evolved. With sustainably sourced paper, efficient production, and responsible recycling, print can be a smart and environmentally conscious choice.

For today’s businesses, it’s not about digital versus paper — it’s about using both strategically. When digital and print work together, brands communicate more effectively, responsibly, and memorably.

In an age of constant screen time, consumers are showing a growing desire to unplug and reconnect with the tangible.

Print offers a physical experience that digital simply can’t replicate – no pop-ups, no distractions, just a more immersive and calming way to consume information.

We have received another warning infringement for parking over our own driveway.

This is an open invitation to Anna Reynolds to come up to Monotone to hear our story.

The story of a 112 year old Tasmanian company employing 12 Tasmanian people doing it tough without any help or support from local council.

Yesterday our business delivery van was issued with a parking warning notice.

Monotone has been on this site (61 Argyle Street) since 1953, previously we were in Liverpool Street, we are 112 years old and very proud to be Tasmanian.

All meter parking has been removed from our front entrance, making it difficult for our customers to park close by.

Yesterday we were issued with a warning telling us we can no longer park our delivery van over our own driveway.

The van is clearly marked and has been parked there (between deliveries) since 1953.

I have spoken to a Hobart City Council representative who explained this is a trial week and it is at the discretion of the Parking Inspector to book all, and anyone parked over driveways, regardless of whether it is your own driveway.

We did not receive any correspondence from the council to explain the change they are proposing to make!

When will common sense prevail with these people??!!

I have seen police cars in the clearway on Bathurst Street after 4pm. The council representative told me the Parking Inspectors check the number plates, and it comes up as DO NOT BOOK.

TO THE HOBART CITY COUNCIL

Let me be quite clear with this message...

I am determined and will continue to park the work van over our driveway, and I refuse to pay any fines that may be issued.

👏We love a positive review!

Receiving wonderful feedback from our valued customers makes us warm and toasty inside, especially on cold wintery Tassie days! Speaking of Tassie, did you know we service the state, not just Hobart? Spread the good word!!

THE TONE AND ITS PEOPLE

MEET 👋 CAROLINE

Caroline was 17 when she first caught the printing bug!

Walking through Monotone for the first time with her beau she inhaled the fumes of printer's ink and paper. She was in heaven! The smell of ink and paper was intoxicating, enticing and just felt right. However, it would be another 12 years before she went back to Monotone.

Caroline started her career at Monotone in 1990, as a casual doing office duties and making coffee for the Boss. Back then in the 1990's it was a tough gig working in a male dominated trade.
Smoking was ok in the workplace... picture a store man, rollie in mouth working around stacks and stacks of paper and girly posters up on the walls!!

Caroline may have been slightly intimidated at first but through hard work and mutual respect gained from her peers, she stuck to her morals and the girly posters came down!

After 2 years Caroline became a full-time employee. Over the next 10 years she was sent off to many training courses to learn about print and the industry. She became accredited in accounting, quality assurance and auditing just to name a few. From Office girl to Office Manager to now being Managing Director. Her passion for printing has not dimmed over the years.

Caroline's Highlights at Monotone - Being the first printer in Tasmania to have Computer to plate capacity. Witnessing our Heidelberg 4colour press being installed into the building with a franna. Being involved in the evolution of digital printing. Merging Newprint into Monotone. But, most of all working with great people who have tremendous skills.

After work Caroline looks forward to going home to her partner and 2 spoilt dogs. Chopper, a 3 legged German Shephard (Gentle Giant) and Bertley a 2 year old Staffy (2 year old on steroids).
