This post on another social media forum brought a smile to our collective faces, but it's a serious message and so true. Once it's written it can't be erased. Be mindful of everything you say in your communications.

A first-time café owner, who was reviewing everything she’s loving and hating about owning a café, said she struggles with abrasive customers. That reaction is completely natural.
However, it's also an important reminder about knowing YOUR customer.

If someone is irrational, fault-finding or overly challenging towards your business, they’re not YOUR customer.

If someone approaches your pop-up café jingling a handful of change while questioning the prices, they’re not YOUR customer. If they shout out their car window demanding a coffee, they’re not YOUR customer. If they ask us to hurry up because they’re running late, they’re not OUR customer.

There’re coffee chains designed to satisfy the price-driven, socially-challenged, time-poor customer.

Having confidence to not appeal to everyone makes you comfortable in your skin. Focus on YOUR customers. The rest aren’t for you. They will take more than they give.

Have you ever NOT responded to a snarky email or text? Well, I decided to do that recently.

Received a very nasty text in past days. Generally, I am, or in fact, was the type who felt the need to respond. Immediately.

Those who know me, know I rarely back down from a good discussion or argument. But, in this case, I didn't want to keep the ball in play.

You don't have to respond to every communication
that comes your way.

You don't have to fight fire with fire.

Sometimes, the sheer act of no response helps
de-escalate a situation and indeed, sometimes not.

Remember you get to decide how you want to respond.

So think about this:
* Pause for a moment.
* Does your response help or put more fire on the situation?
* What is the desired outcome?
* What issues may be going on with the other person?
* Would picking up the phone and talking help?
* Would responding that you received the text and you want to think about a response, help?

Remember, there are always choices. Immediacy is not always the answer.

We wish our clients and colleagues a Merry and of course, Bright, Christmas and Festive Season. Encouragingly, the past year has seen our professional lives almost back to some sort of normality Let's hope it continues in that vein in 2023. Enjoy a well-deserved break with family and friends, and we'll see you in the New Year.

Delighted to share that Bright partner and co-director Ingrid Harrison has been appointed to the board of COTA (Council On The Ageing) Tasmania. Advocacy on behalf of our elder citizens is vital. It's an important and growing, sector which needs skilled people to undertake a range of roles to ensure that as people age they get the appropriate support. The COTA team is a vibrant one and with this combined enthusiasm and energy much has been achieved. Ingrid looks forward to playing a proactive part in that team effort.

ARE you regularly posting blogs as part of your communications? Are you a media spokesperson for your business or organisation? Or are you regularly part of zoom session meetings? If you're doing all of those by a video link rather than having a camera operator present, then how you position your device and how you present your surroundings is vitally important. If you're communicating via a link, then this is for you: https://lnkd.in/gpYwgA7z
