North Sydney Council approached us to design and deliver their online exhibition, ‘Chinese Market Gardeners and Storekeepers in North Sydney 1870-1932’. The exhibition explores the contributions of Chinese Australians to the area’s history.

Drawing on archives, immigration records, and press articles, the exhibition highlights personal stories of gardeners and shopkeepers, their work, and their lives. Interactive features enable exploration of archival and contemporary maps to discover in-depth detail about over 50 property addresses, their occupants, floor-plans and other richly evocative data.

Curated by historian and author, Ian Hoskins, the project was inspired by Council’s rare property ledgers (1867–1940), the originals of which are also viewable by appointment at the Stanton Library.

A sample of the comprehensive interior wayfinding signage component of a broader interior and exterior signage commission for a retirement and assisted living village.

Set amidst landscaped grounds and bordering native bushland, Green Hills, a facility at East Maitland, includes 60 one- and two-bedroom villas, complemented by a Wellness Centre, Café, Respite Centre, and Community Kitchen.

‘It has been a pleasure collaborating with Iain and the team at JDA on this landmark project. They have seamlessly integrated our branding, our desire for clean and clear signage without it appearing institutional, and really accomplished what we wanted to achieve – wayfinding that is easy to navigate, modern in design and integrates beautifully with the landscape and architectural finishes. The end results have perfectly realised our vision for this project JDA’s team are friendly, professional and responsive and we are grateful that they came on this journey with us.’

A glimpse of the exterior destination and wayfinding signage system we delivered for , and its extension to parking areas.

The design aesthetic was inspired by FHC’s vision to convey a ‘non-institutional’ environment. To achieve this, we referenced the facility’s contemporary architecture, interior design, and the surrounding natural environs.
The resulting signage system features faux timber elements, and a colour palette in response to the building’s proximity to a riparian corridor and bushland park. Consideration was given to material durability and ease of maintenance, with the specification of aluminium cladding in a printed and textured woodgrain finish.

A series of interpretive signs, illustrated in-house and produced to help visitors to Brooklyn north of Sydney, understand the significance of mangroves and the biodiversity they support.

Located on the Hawkesbury River estuary, the site is significant as it represents one of the densest regions of mangrove in Australia.

Apart from being home to a huge variety of marine and birdlife, these shoreline forests perform the important role of protecting against erosion and extracting carbon from the atmosphere - locking it away in the pungent mud. In fact, mangroves are twice as efficient at extracting carbon from the atmosphere as forests on dry land.

Carrs Bush Discovery Track at Fagan Park in Galston, northwestern Sydney, makes a rare and critically endangered parcel of Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest accessible to visitors of all ages, and physical and intellectual abilities.

As an accessible track, sculptural elements were included to encourage active learning through enhanced sensory engagement.

Combined with illustrations and presentation methods that included reclaimed naturally felled local native eucalypt limbs as display furniture, the overall design aesthetic sought to complement this rare and significant natural environment.

See earlier posts for more about the project, and a walk-through of Carrs Bush Discovery Track.

Social distancing decals produced for The Royce, Penrith’s concierge and café areas continue to perform well.
