“What does a graphic designer actually do?” A question I get a fair bit. (Knowing that maybe they are thinking: “Don’t you just press buttons on a computer or whip stuff up in Canva?” 😅) In a nutshell: a commercial artist helps brands communicate visually, shaping the way we interpret information, delivering messages clearly, and making sure everything looks good and is easy to use (aka 'user experience'). Because let’s be honest - we all prefer things that look nice and make sense.
Do you need to spend a million bucks to make that magic happen? Nope. But like any trade, you choose your designer based on experience and budget. You either give us very clear instructions… or you trust us for our style and say, “Go for it!”
Graphic design is a process. If you start building a house and then decide halfway through to move the kitchen, you know that’s going to cost extra and cause delays. Same goes for design. AI has come a long way since Clippy from MS Word - but graphic design still isn’t just about pressing buttons. It’s creative problem-solving backed by years of skill and experience.
So, come to your designer prepared! 🙏✔️ Final text, approved and edited✔️ Any existing files from previous designers (a blurry screenshot of your logo from your phone just won’t cut it)✔️ Realistic expectations (no, I can't turn your Nokia 7650 pics into magazine-quality product shots)
And if you’ve made it this far; thanks for attending my TED Talk 😅 (According to my kids, every time I open my mouth, it is a TED Talk… honestly impressed they even know what that is.)
25-ish years in and I can feel ‘worn out-and-grumpy’ on my door step and when every young whipper snapper seems 12 years old to me and I secretly roll my eyes when they tell me how it will be, I still love my trade. Maybe more than ever 💛
