On Saturday, I spent the morning taking a group of Australian women on a shopping experience here in Sevilla as part of the beautiful Surrender to Spain tour run by Casey of .

It was 38 degrees, so we were definitely shopping the Spanish way...slowly and with air conditioning wherever possible 😅

I wrapped up last week with this fabulous cohort of women from Bank ABC in London.

As part of their Women’s Network, Empower, I was invited in to help build confidence and presence through personal style.

Not from a “what should women wear?” perspective, but from the deeper way that style can help you feel more confident, more visible, and more like yourself at work.

So while there is so much we covered during this 4-part programme, I wanted to share a few of the learnings that may be helpful for your own style journey too.

1. Other people’s perception of you becomes their reality. Whether it is accurate or not, people form impressions quickly, and a big part comes down to your appearance. But you can actively shape that impression through how you show up so it reflects your values, potential, ambition and the level you are ready to step into.

2. Colour is one of the fastest ways to shift your presence. Don't be afraid to use it as the powerful communication tool it is. Black may feel safe, but it's not always the most flattering, memorable or impactful choice, especially in corporate environments.

3. Personality is part of presence. If you want to be seen as credible, you don’t need to erase the parts of you that are creative, feminine or bold. The key is learning how to translate those qualities intentionally through colour, print, accessories, texture or detail.

4. Keeping clothes that no longer work has a cost. Every piece that no longer fits, flatters or reflects who you are now quietly adds friction to your morning. Letting go creates more than physical space - it creates the mental space to start dressing for the future you too.

Have you ever walked into a meeting and doubted that you 'look the part'?

A client I worked with had this feeling often.

She would put hours of work and planning into her presentations, only to show up and feel her confidence drop when she entered the room.

While confident in her expertise, there was a feeling that her style didn't match.

And in those crucial first few moments, when impressions are being formed, her value wasn't being made visible.

And her style wasn't reflecting how she wanted to be perceived.

Digging down a bit deeper, she shared she had a few 'safe' fallback outfits she always wore that made her feel 'fine'.

Most women focus on what they will say in important rooms.

But very few think about how they will be seen first.

And that’s where the 7-second rule comes in.

You might be doing everything right and still not being seen at the level you’re ready for.

Because whether you realise it or not, your presence is always being interpreted.

And your style is part of that signal.

But here's where I see so many high-performing women get stuck:

When you’re not clear on what to wear, you default to what feels safe.

The same “it’s fine, it’s professional" choices.

They might be fine, but they're not doing anything to elevate your visibility or help decision-makers see you at the level you’re ready for.

I’ll be turning 47 in a few months, and if I’m honest, the last few years have brought a lot of change.

My priorities feel different.
What I want to focus on has shifted.
And of course, my body is changing too.

Some days it’s subtle, but on other days, it’s more noticeable.

Clothes I used to wear without thinking don’t feel quite right anymore. Not wrong, just not as aligned with how I want to feel at this moment.

And I know I’m not alone in this.

For many women, this stage of life brings shifts in body shape, weight distribution, and hormones. It can feel like a moving target.

What helped me was realising that it’s not about going back to what used to work, but about understanding my body as it is now.

For me, understanding three key elements has made getting dressed so much easier:

1) Silhouette - the overall outline of your body
2) Proportions - how your body is balanced (longer legs, shorter torso, etc.)
3) Scale - your bone structure and physical presence

When you begin to see your body through this lens, you stop trying to “fix” it and start learning how to work with it.

Now, I focus on dressing in a way that feels both polished and comfortable, because those two things are not mutually exclusive.

In fact, for me, that’s the goal.

Because our bodies will continue to evolve, but how we respond to those changes can either create frustration or confidence.

And style gives us a way to support ourselves through that transition, rather than resist it.
