On this International Women's Day 2024 it’s a time to celebrate all women who contribute to society – mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts and grandmothers who walk beside us to create a better world. We all start life as ordinary people, but it is what we do that makes us extraordinary.
I take this opportunity to reflect upon and recognise four beautiful female friends in my life who are achieving the extraordinary to create extraordinary outcomes.
Kerry-anne Konstantinou driving excellence in HR management, to create a workplace of choice.
Professor Helen OConnell AO, Australia’s first female urologist and a trailblazing woman driving better outcomes for women’s health.
Sandra Klepetko, passionate about creating a better environment. Through her love of music is the backbone of the Pianos Recycled enterprise breathing new life into old pianos past their time and recreating magic with them.
Kirsty Brady, an education professional who creates a joy of the most basic of flowers, even flowers past their prime, with her enterprise, Flower Joy.
I have many female friends who started life as ordinary people and remain humble, ordinary people, but with a passion to create extraordinary outcomes, they are all extraordinary women.
And to finish, I applaud and give thanks to an extraordinary woman who shaped my life to think big and excel - Irene Maskell, a woman who guided my Year 11 and 12 years as the school’s senior mistress. She had the ability to recognize that special quality in each of her students and drove the best outcomes in each of us. She gave me the confidence to drive my big ideas, stand tall, look at the horizon and fly to my destination with confidence and achieve my goals.

Celebrating International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the tenacity and strength of women to drive change.
I was honoured to be the guest speaker at an International Women’s Day event in the town where I grew up – the story of the girl from Ingham who did smash the glass ceiling.
My message today is one of gratitude to all who were part of my journey and the support they provided me: “I feel privileged to share that my journey has been a very positive one with every mentor, boss and person of influence in my life giving me every encouragement to succeed. It wasn’t handed on a platter. I had to prove my worth and then the recognition came. To say that I’ve had to fly by the seat of my pants in an ever-growing, fast-paced world is an understatement. But through tenacity, strength, commitment and a desire to be successful, no matter the challenges, all those qualities have always been recognised by those in power to allow me to keep smashing the glass ceiling. I say thank you to you all. It is now my duty to ensure I deliver the same support to those embarking on their career journey. I want you to know … Ask … and I will be there to help you too.”

A big thank you to everyone who inspired me, supported and helped me in the journey as candidate for the seat of Maranoa in the Boroondara City Council election. What an amazing experience. The current councillor and Mayor was returned to office, but I did poll a very credible second, so not a bad effort. To everyone who voted for me, thank you for putting your trust in me. I am sure Cr Cynthia Watson will continue to represent all your interests and I wish her well in this next term as Councillor for Maranoa in the City of Boroondara.

Hey there everyone, I’m Baking for An Amazing Paws. Yes, my famous chocolate cupcakes will be baking for the RSPCA Cupcake Day.
I love my furry friends and if I am your next councillor for Maranoa Ward I am keen to deliver residents a dog park at the Winfield Park Reserve.
So grab your apron and preheat those ovens and join me in baking your favourite cakes on Cupcake Day celebrated on Monday 26 October. While keeping socially safe and physically distanced add a pinch of community and a cup of good conversation, to make this Cupcake Day event the bake for real change. Vote [1] Yolanda Torrisi for a good change in Maranoa. Make sure your vote is posted by 6pm this Friday 23 October.

Residents in Maranoa have asked my position on the North East Link …
The council has done a deal with the government. Looking through the publicly available information, winding that back would be legally difficult if not impossible. The opportunity to bring pressure upon government was the duty of the Mayor and her council. They did the deal.
No matter what transpires it is going to occur. The State Government Victoria Big Build program is more determined than ever post COVID to proceed with big construction projects to boost the economy.
Hence any answers you will receive now from candidates would fall into the following categories:
1. Candidates who say they will oppose the North East Link and are lying to try and get your vote, because from all I can see the North East Link will proceed.
2. Councillors and Candidates who genuinely have opposed the North East Link and still oppose it, but the horse has bolted.
3. Support my candidacy Vote [1] Yolanda Torrisi to be the new councillor for Maranoa and at end of day the North East Link proceeds, but I will fight to stop the 2% year on year rate increase over the next three years compounding on the 2% rate rise already implemented this year. This is lazy budgeting and council should become more efficient and streamlined. Why should residents foot the bill of a lazy budget?
