Optimism -- The Willingness to Persist

The world seems to be falling apart. People are becoming more and more distrustful of establishments, and of each other. The future seems bleak. Unsurprisingly, a lot of people are now harbouring a “what’s the point?” attitude about everything.
While I do agree that things are terrible the entire world over, there are still things to look forward to. I don’t mean this in a toxic-positive type of way: I acknowledge that the systems that we’re in right now are unfair in a lot of ways, and a lot of people are suffering because of it.

Optimism is directly staring at the bleakness of life and deciding to persist anyway.

Focus -- Keeping Your Head Straight In a Storm
Studies have proven that focus and willpower are limited resources.

All of us (some more than others, of course) are currently existing under a constant threat: an illness that could put us, and others in danger. A lot of us are living unregimented daily lives as well. Workstations encroach on living spaces as personal time blurs into work schedules. Nothing feels normal, and every goal feels strangely monolithic.

If you’ve managed to deliver what’s asked of you (by your work, your family, and yourself) despite this pandemic, that is a success that should be celebrated. One’s ability to focus, and to work quietly, as hard as they can, despite the anxieties and the adversities -- that is a mark of a successful person.

According to Merriam-Webster, success is a degree or measure of succeeding, a favourable or desired outcome, or the attainment of wealth, favour, or eminence. It is safe to assume that societal ideas regarding success mirror this definition -- attaining one’s goals and getting the praise and recognition for it. If you ask me, however, success is something a bit more personal than that.

2020 has challenged a lot of my perceptions about life, as I’m sure it did for a lot of people. As everyone’s lives have come to a grinding halt, I realized that success is all about what someone does when no one is watching. If I have to summarise success in three words, it will be:

Focus,
Optimism,
Integrity.

Persistence is what makes the difference. It’s knowing that the world is broken in a lot of ways, and thinking about what you can do to make things a little bit better. While everyone says “what’s the point”, a successful person says, “how can I help?

That is the attitude that defines success. No fanfare, not a lot of demonstration, just pure, unrelenting mettle.

Integrity -- What Do You Do When No One’s Watching?
When it comes to integrity, it’s a little more straightforward: you either have it or you don’t (at least in fortunate societies like Australia.) One of the side effects of living in the internet age is the fact that social media likes and comments are now a legitimate reason for a person to do anything. The effect is at a neurological level: the regions of our brains associated with reward light up when we receive a like or a comment.

Integrity is living according to your morals and values while you’re alone. Especially when you’re alone.

Integrity ties all these three characteristics together. Successful people have to have all these three when no one is watching. It’s easier to be the best we can be when people are around, and our egos are boosting us. It’s when things are seemingly hopeless that we are truly tested.

This pandemic has challenged everyone, and when I look around me, I see people who, despite being in challenging situations themselves, still find the time and the effort to help other people. I see people facing hardships with unbelievable grace, humility, and modesty. In my opinion, these people are the real champions, and theirs are the real success stories.

2020 is probably one of the hardest years in recent history, but it also allows us to see our fellow human beings in a different light. This year has gifted me with a new outlook, and a new goal to strive for.
With all this being said, it’s important to ask ourselves, “Will I maintain my optimism? Will I be as persistent as I used to be?”

The answers to those definitive questions are yours… and yours alone.

What new realizations and outlook has this year given you? I’d love to hear them.

When I send priority tasks to my team I often say... Firstly BREATH DEEPLY!

It’s so simple yet so powerful

Especially when we get more work from our clients (every day)!

One of the things that I always talk to my team about is the value of having a sound, mindful relationship with one’s own body and well-being. Our work is exciting and fast-paced, and as is the case with every fulfilling career, it can be stressful at times. When the going gets tough, I tell my team:

“Breathe a lot, and don’t forget to eat mindfully.”

Simple words, but come to think of it, all good advice stems from the idea that lies at the core of this sentence: taking care of oneself by listening to one’s own body.

Mindful, Not Restrictive

A lot of people seem to equate mindful eating with restriction. I, for one, used to think of tasty food as being automatically unhealthy! The more I read about the topic, however, the more I realized that the truth is not as black-and-white as I thought.

While consistency should always be the goal when it comes to healthy eating, some studies have actually shown that what some might call “cheat days” can actually help with long-term discipline. While the default should always be delicious and nutritious, I’m not here to tell you how frequently you should allow yourself a treat. That’s your prerogative, and yours alone because no one knows your body as you do. The key is in knowing how to listen closely to what it’s telling you.

Your relationship with healthy eating shouldn’t feel like having a friend who did you a favour once and won’t shut up about it. It shouldn’t feel overwhelming. Food should always feel like a conscious celebration -- of life, of nature, of yourself. What you eat, and when, should be guided by the amount of respect and appreciation that you have for your mind and body, and what it can do.

The Art of Breathing

Breathe in. Now breathe out.

It’s strange how we never even have to think about breathing unless someone, or something, reminds us to. However, there have been studies that confirmed a direct link between emotions and breathing. The way that we breathe affects how we feel, think, and ultimately, act.

Over the course of a day, how many times do you pause and focus on your breathing? When did you last sit still and just marveled at your body’s capability to take in life energy, and send it back into the world? Try it. As you focus on your breaths, notice as all the noise just fades away. When you breathe mindfully, you stop “having to” -- you just are.

When things get too tough, I always remind my team to take a minute, close their eyes, and focus on their breathing. Everything is going to be alright. However, when the pressure’s too high, the mind sometimes forgets that. And so we must breathe, and breathe intentionally.

Creating a Healthy Feedback Loop

Now ask yourself: what does your body need now? What gives your body energy now, and in the long term? The answers to that are very personal. Only you know what you need to do, or not do to fuel your body not only now, but in the long run.

Things that might work well for other people might not be what you need. Just because people harp incessantly about the benefits of a brand-new diet, a guaranteed high-power workout, the brand new cleanse that so-and-so celebrity swears by, or a brand-new spa on the block doesn’t mean that you have to buy into it, too.

Our society’s view on our relationship with our bodies has always been outward-focused. It’s always been about how others perceive our bodies, or how we want to present it to others. This society has always tied success to beauty, health, and wealth.

And so, in the name of success, we suffer.

The thing is, if you listen to your body, you will know exactly which things fuel you, inspire you, and energize you long-term. And when you start doing so, you will realize that you are too smart to be successful, at least successful in this world’s narrow sense of the word.

You are not simply successful. You are so much more. You are enough.
