Wow, this house is super messy, there’s washing everywhere, this mum is she still in her pyjamas, etcetera, etcetera.

What I AM thinking:

How can I be a soft place for this mum to land today?

What’s happening with breastfeeding, and how can I support this dyad?

How is this mum really doing?

And my favourite… What is already going well that I can help them see?

I’ve never walked into a home thinking about the mess.

I’m thinking about how I can best help you and your baby 🫶🏻

Today I had a creative meeting with my filmmaker Leanne, and I am feeling sooo excited.

Over the past three months, much of my focus has been on delivering my Mentorship for Midwives (plus Lactation Consultants, Nurses, Doulas, etc). It has been an incredible season of teaching, mentoring and supporting these beautiful professionals, but it did mean the documentary had to take a back seat.

I’m so happy to say I’m back working on this project and feeling completely pumped about bringing it to life.

One of my clients breastfed this way yesterday, tucking her singlet top underneath her breast while feeding. This morning she messaged me with pain from a blocked duct in the exact area where the fabric had been.

While this can be a handy way to breastfeed, just be mindful that any pressure on the breast has the potential to block the flow of milk along your ducts.

If you do use this technique, make sure there is plenty of slack in the fabric and that the material isn’t digging into the underside of your breast.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) released proposed changes to the Registration Standard for Endorsed Midwives and they are now seeking feedback.

One of the most significant proposed changes? Potentially the removal of the current 5000 hour requirement to become an Endorsed Midwife.

For many hospital based Midwives, this requirement has been one of the biggest barriers towards endorsement and expanding access to private midwifery care for families.

The consultation survey closes this Friday 5th June, so if you haven’t yet submitted your response, now is the time.

The lovely mum I visited in Caulfield North yesterday had a really difficult breastfeeding experience with her first baby, so this time around she reached out early for support.

She has breast implants (under the muscle) and has been especially worried about her milk supply, particularly because one side feels like it’s producing much more than the other.

I’ve supported many mums to successfully breastfeed with implants in private practice and one thing I always explore is why the implants were done initially. Sometimes, if surgery was related to insufficient glandular tissue, this can play more of a role in milk supply than the implants themselves.

In my experience, larger implants can impact breastfeeding more and may increase the likelihood of ni**le damage too.

I have a very specific focus with this mum and I’ll be sharing some of my tips around breastfeeding with implants in my next mailing list email.

Driving home thinking about today’s breastfeeding client.

Second guessing:
Her milk supply.
How often her baby breastfeeds.
How much sleep her baby is getting.
Whether she’s doing enough.

I wish I could bottle up reassurance and leave it behind.

Because establishing breastfeeding is hard.

But to your baby, you are warmth, safety, nourishment, regulation and home all in one.

And to them… you are already more than enough.

This week I supported a client to breastfeed in a carrier.

Such a great position for many because the baby naturally approaches the breast “chin first” rather than nose first.

For this particular baby it meant a wider mouth and an asymmetrical attachment.

Sometimes small positional changes can make breastfeeding feel sooo much easier for both mother and baby.
