Today’s install I guess you could say was right up my alley. Firstly a big thank you to Nick the signwriter for referring me to this client. What initially sounded like a straight forward lettering job sent me down the rabbit hole of mid Century architects and era correct lettering styles. The client has an amazing house by the architect Eric Nicholls a student of Walter Burnley Griffin and wanted some text for the front window identifying this unique property. I guess most people would just produce something generic, I mean who really notices something like this?
I felt this house deserved a bit more effort so I did a deep dive as to what lettering would sit well with the property. I tried the simple Trajan style which always looks good but then settled on this quirky Arts and Crafts style which really worked for the style and history of the property. I ended up taking both versions out to the job and let the client decide. I know it sounds a bit over the top for a simple lettering job but I love it when it comes together in a complementary way with the building!

I’m dedicating this post to friends that help you out when you get in over your head!
This long haul project finally came down to installation day with access equipment and traffic management booked and the usual Melbourne forecast of “showers” that generic term that could mean drought or a deluge. I turned up at 6am to help with the access equipment unload, it was a scissor lift and a beast. Traffic management turned up at 7am.
My fellow signees Nick and Anthony Marandola turned up to help. These are the friends that always turn up to help on difficult jobs when you find yourself in over your head. I promised them today that my days of taking on really hard jobs is coming to an end!
This project initially came up about 2 years ago with a general enquiry about the possibility of recreating the look of the original signs at Gilbey’s Distillery in West Melbourne. The distillery had been converted into warehouse apartments and all the original lettering chiseled off. The owners corp committee were really keen to get the character back to a facade that was a bit bland. With some funding assistance from the Victorian Heritage Restoration Fund we were able to move forward with the project.
The lettering was made out of Multipanel high density urethane, spray painted in epoxy primers, top coated in matte 2k polyurethane, the dragon in castle logo was also made out of Multipanel, carved , epoxy resin coated, painted in glaze coats of acrylic and top coated with a matte 2k top coat.
There was a tonne of admin and design time involved with this one to get it through the council permitting, heritage fund applications etc etc. one of the heritage fund thoughts was that as the original photos indicated that the mouldings around the signage were painted we should try and get close to that look which I think was a good decision.
I like these projects but sometimes wish they weren’t so high and with difficult access!

This has been an interesting challenge over the past little while. ( in between projects) it’s part of a larger sign job reinstating the signs at Gilbey’s distillery in West Melbourne. The original signs and logo had been chiseled off when the building was turned into apartments some time in the past.
I carved this dragon logo in Multipanel high density urethane panel, epoxy resin coated and epoxy primer followed by various coats of colour to achieve some depth and patina.
The project will be installed in September so I’ll post some more images once it’s all up. * AI generated copper background *human carved and painted logo

A big few days painting this mural for Invite Me in Yarraville. I think it was well suited for a signwriter due to the amount of lines and graphic shapes. The surface was a little crusty but I enjoyed the challenge!
A big thank you to Michael at Viponds paints for getting these striking colours matched so well.
The design was created by Georgia Perry for Invite Me’s new shop in Anderson St Yarraville.

I just finished another round of hand painted container signs for Portable PPB. There were 3 this time all the same, they take a toll on the body so I painted one over two days, and did one container per week. The sides weren’t too bad but the end corrugations were tricky. It’s hard to get photos without distortions… glad they are done 😉 Spotswood Village Traders Association

A small victory this morning. I made another “sympathetic” looking directional sign for Williamstown Town Hall. These timber ones sit really nicely in the hallways with their decorative tessellated tiles.

Yesterday’s install for my Spotswood neighbours Mind in Mind Psychology. A business with great exposure to the very busy railway line and a pesky tree 🌲 that had to be worked around.
Always a privilege to have work up in the neighbourhood and great clients like Jen and the Mind in Mind crew.
