Open your contact form and count the boxes.

If there are more than four, that could be why enquiries are slow. Most people fill these forms in on a phone, half interested. Each extra box gives them a reason to stop.

Name, phone, email, message. That covers it.

Try this with your own ads. Could a competitor put their logo on one and run it without changing a word?

For most small businesses the honest answer is yes. Trusted by locals. Quality work, fair prices. Lines like that read as filler because everyone in the category says them, and people scroll straight past.

It matters more than it used to. Meta and TikTok now do most of the audience targeting on their own. You hand over a budget and a goal, and the system finds the people. The ad is the part you still control.

The fix is usually specificity. If a job took six days when it normally takes three weeks, that's the ad.

I've written up the full approach we use at Phoenix Marketing: how to earn the first two seconds, why one idea per ad, and how to test creative properly without wasting a month of budget. Link in comments.

Open your website and count the photos that are actually yours.

For plenty of small businesses the answer is zero. The smiling call centre woman. The models in hard hats who've clearly never set foot on a site. Customers recognise stock photos straight away and scroll past.

A few real photos, even ones off your phone, fix that.

Nobody ever grew a business out of guilt about Instagram.

But guilt is what I hear on first calls. We should post more. We should probably be on TikTok. Someone told us we need Reels.

Should, should, should.

That pressure mostly comes from watching other businesses post. The platforms help it along too. They're built to make you feel behind.

Your customers can settle this. Work out where your last ten came from. Actually list them. For most small businesses it lands on one or two places. Referrals and Google, mostly. Sometimes Facebook and repeat customers.

Trying to cover five platforms feels safe. It isn't. You end up half-doing all of them while the one that brings in work gets whatever's left.

So this week, pick the channel your customers came through and do it properly for a month. Let the rest sit. Nothing bad will happen.

You are the worst person to decide where your marketing should go.

Not because you don't know your business. Because you're not your customer.

Often when I first speak to a client, they say something like this. "I never click on ads, so I don't think they work for us." "I'm on Instagram all day, we should do more there." Both feel like solid reasons. Both are really just describing the owner's own habits.

The trouble is your media diet has nothing to do with your customer's. You might scroll past every ad going, while the exact person who needs you is typing your service into Google right now and clicking the first result. You skip it. They don't.

So the gut call, this channel works and that one doesn't, is usually just personal taste dressed up as strategy. And it quietly sends the budget to the wrong place.

The fix isn't a better gut. It's a simple record of where real enquiries actually come from. Not clicks, not likes. Enquiries. Do that for a month or two and the answer stops being an opinion. Often it's the channel you'd written off.

Next time you catch yourself saying a channel does or doesn't work, ask one thing: am I describing my customers, or just myself?

Google decides what you rank for. Meta decides who sees your posts. Your ad account can be suspended on a Tuesday with no warning.

Email is the only channel you own.

Most small businesses already have a list sitting in their invoicing system and have never emailed it once.

Email is the only marketing channel you own outright. A practical guide to building a list properly, what to send, how often, and the numbers that actually matter.

The most expensive enquiry you'll ever get is the one you already paid for and never rang back.

Everyone wants more leads. More clicks, more calls, more forms filled in. So the money goes to the top: the ads, the posts, a new website to pull more people in.

Then I ask one question on a first call. Of the enquiries that came in last month, how many did you actually get back to, and how fast?

It's not laziness. You're flat out running the business. A form lands at 4pm on a Friday, you mean to reply, and by Monday it's buried. That person already rang the next name on the list.

Here's the part that stings. You paid to create that enquiry. The ad worked. The website worked. The leak is right at the end, where it's cheapest to fix and easiest to ignore.

So before you spend more to bring people in, look at what happens to the ones already reaching you. Track it for a month: enquiries in, and how many got a reply the same day. If that number's low, more traffic won't save you. It'll just cost more to waste.

Where does yours leak?

You test your own website on office wifi, so it feels quick.

Your customer opens it on mobile data on the train, and a slow first few seconds loses them before they read a word.

If you left Phoenix Marketing tomorrow, you'd take everything with you.

Every account we set up is in your name. The Google Ads account, the analytics, the page, the tracking. You own all of it, and you always hold the logins.

That's not how a lot of agencies work. Some set the ad account up under their own name, so if you leave, the history, the data, and sometimes the campaigns walk out the door with them. It's a quiet way of making you stay.

We'd rather you stay because the work is good.

For a client it comes down to two things. You can look at your own numbers any time, not just when a report lands. And you're never stuck because someone else holds the password.

If you're with an agency now, it's worth checking whose name your ad account is actually in. The answer tells you a fair bit.
