Unpopular opinion (but I’ll say it anyway):⁠

Most brands are run by founders who think they know best.⁠

I get it. You’ve built the thing. You live and breathe it. Of course you have opinions. A lot of the time, they're valid.⁠

But marketing rarely fails because of a lack of passion or care. ⁠
It fails because there’s no outside perspective.⁠

You’re too close to it.⁠
Your customers aren’t.⁠

This is why good strategy isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about asking better questions, pressure-testing assumptions, and letting real customer insight (not just gut feel) lead the way.⁠

The easiest way to bring this approach into what you're doing?⁠
Customer personas.⁠

And before you roll your eyes and tell me you know who your customer is. I don’t mean the fluffy, made-up kind of customer avatar. I mean practical personas you actually use to make decisions. Every. Single. Day.⁠

Ok, I’ll go first…⁠

I worked at CRUK (Cancer Research UK) a decade ago, but the impact it’s had on how I do marketing every single day is immeasurable.⁠

Why? It really boils down to three things I still carry with me.⁠

1. Customer-focused marketing.⁠

Properly customer-led thinking. Creating customer personas for every new product, campaign or development. I use personas daily in my work, but over time I’ve refined how I build them and how I help clients truly understand their customers (and create their own). This image is a real-life snapshot of us workshopping new personas back in 2016.⁠

2. Agile ways of working.⁠

I don’t follow every framework to the letter, but the principles stuck. Working iteratively. Continuous feedback loops. Real-time, collaborative communication across teams. It’s directly shaped how Dear Charlie works with clients today.⁠

3. User testing.⁠

Testing assumptions before building anything big. Creating quick, low-tech prototypes. Getting real feedback early. This mindset has heavily influenced how I plan marketing campaigns, and experience has shown me it simply works better.⁠

A big focus during that time was email marketing (more on that another day) and SEO. We’re big believers that SEO is a no-brainer to focus on for small businesses, and it’s only become more important as AI-generated summaries have started changing how people interact with search results.⁠

Eco Cheeks’ website was already in a strong place after a recent relaunch. Our role was to support the internal team to tighten things up further, with a series of small, intentional technical improvements before we headed into maternity leave.⁠
