For over 19 years I have been helping companies with their Marketing, and for as long I have been working on mostly projects that are nothing to do with Marketing.

Knowing what I know, I can categorically say that Marketing is the By-Product of a well run company - let me explain what I mean - read this short article.

I'd love your feedback on this, did it make you think, do you agree, do you think that we need pretty branding first and customer service is just a nice to have?

For over 19 years I have worked in the space of Marketing, but marketing is literally the end result of the work I really do - let me explain what I mean:- Marketing is the By-Product of a Well-Run Business Marketing is Not Just a Design Exercise Marketing is often mistaken for a quick-fix solution....

It's been coming for a while now, my pivot. Now it's time.

Over the past few years I have been upskilling, re framing and gathering momentum to alter my pathway. Im there, which is right here. The pathway is forged.

I have been wearing all the hats
-Marketer
-TAFE Trainer- love doing this
-Board Member
-Mentor for various companies and orgs
-Advisor for various orgs
-Connector - this is my superpower

It's time to let one of these hats go...

So as this year comes to a slow close, I wave adieu to 17 years of executing marketing for small industrial companies and say hello to focusing more on my educating, connecting, advising and chairing work. I will still have my core interest and focus in manufacturing and industry - that is where I found my sweet spot. I get it - I love it. I just don't want to do the doing anymore.

The journey has been fabulous and I have met so many amazing companies but it is genuinely time to move towards doing the work that meets my purpose. Educating, Connecting, Scaling, Growing, Developing Strategy, Uniting Teams, Building Resilience.

The days of writing copy and developing websites and brochures really has been gone for quite some time. You know when you are trying to continue to squeeze yourself into a size 10 when really - you out grew that a while back - well that's how it feels doing client based work these days. Its constricting and it doesn't suit me, all my “skills” don't fit in. 🙂

So off with the shackles and onwards I go into a world where my value is recognised, my purpose is fulfilled, my bucket is full and I feel empowered and happy again. It's time. I need to feel valued, appreciated and heard.

Bring on 2023...

If you think I can help your company - talk to me. It's that simple.

Opening soon: Business Basics Grants program - Round 4

The Queensland Government is continuing to show its support for the small business sector with the launch of Round 4 of the $5 million Business Basics Grant program.

Eligible small businesses (including non-employing and micro businesses, and new and emerging businesses with less than 20 employees and a turnover of less than $300,000 for the last financial year) will be able register their interest to apply for a $5,000 grant from 9am, 24 November.

The program guidelines, eligibility criteria and FAQs for the Business Basics Grants program are now available online.

Funds are to be used for a project to increase core skills and adopt best practice — think website development and upgrades, strategic marketing, training and coaching, and business planning for continuity and succession.

This round has a $5 million funding pool, of that $1.5 million has been allocated for regional businesses outside of South East Queensland. The program is extremely popular, and we receive many more applications than can be funded. We are committed to best practice and listened to feedback from small businesses to make the application process easier.

Grants will be awarded through a two-stage process starting with businesses registering their interest to apply by completing an online form that collects basic business information. Then businesses will be selected by a ballot process to complete their applications.

This process ensures all small businesses have equal and fair opportunity to register their interest at any time once registrations open and have an equal chance of being selected to apply. Please note that not all businesses that complete a registration of interest or a full application will be successful.

Registrations of Interest will be open from 9am, 24 November and will close at 11.59pm on 5 December 2022.

Part 2. The commercialisation of your novel idea

You have conceived a new product – well done! Now you are in “unicorn land” where everything is fabulous and in your pipe dreams, money is pouring out of the sky. The leprechauns are collecting your money in Tonka trucks because their tiny little buckets are just not big enough and you’re swanning around in Noosa wearing white linen drinking piccolos at a Hastings Street located coffee house watching the world waltz by.

So at what point did you intend to roll your linen sleeves up and get on with the ground roots of building your business? When are you going to decide who is going to buy your product/service?

Do you know what your competitors are up to? Do you know who they are? You will have some competitors, even if not directly, indirectly money gets spent on “things” and you’ll need to convince your customer to buy your “thing” over the thing they usually buy”.

If your magical idea is novel and unique then you have a different game to play – it is called “Education” and it is MUCH harder.

Convincing someone why your idea is useful is like pulling teeth. Think about all those direct shopping channels on TV. Unless you want to sound like an “All American twit” saying the same thing 18 times in 2 minutes then you are going to need a solid game plan on how to get your product out into the market.

Part 1. Success comes when goals are “clearly” defined

It’s that jolt that you get when you get that “doozie” of an idea, it’s a cracker and you know it, you get the shivers and you just know that you are onto a winner. So your mind starts going into “overdrive” and you are way ahead of your why and how and you are into when and what you might make from this incredible and foolproof idea.

So without really strategically thinking, you have started the copy for your website, without even considering whom you are talking to (who might buy this idea). You have envisaged the brand without considering colour, shape, emotive reasoning or brand equity at all. You just see this pretty emblem and think – yep that’s it!

Then you start planning how much you are going to sell this idea for and what happens when it goes global, you are smelling dollar signs before you have even invested a single dollar into your concept or even prototyped the thing.
