Saturday night I had the privilege of being in a room with a thousand small business owners at the Australian Small Business Champion Awards. This was my third year as a judge, and an honour I don’t take lightly.

Story after inspirational story came from that stage. Different industries, different journeys, different struggles.

But one word, one particular theme, kept coming up, over and over again, in almost every acceptance speech.

Family.

Family who believed in them before the business made sense. Family who put up the money when no bank would. Family who sat at kitchen tables and talked through the hard nights. Businesses now in their second, third, even fourth generation, all tracing their roots back to someone who said yes, back them.

Even Steve Loe the founding director of the awards, opened the evening talking about his own parents and how their encouragement shaped everything that followed.

It really landed. Because for me, it’s been no different.

Because when you have someone in your corner like that, it gives you something that’s really hard to manufacture on your own.

Courage.

The courage to step outside your comfort zone. To take that extra risk you know could bring the reward. To back yourself, because someone else already does.

That belief from the people closest to you can be the difference between playing it safe and actually going for it.

Ambitious Founders and CEOs don’t need more marketing.

They need someone in the room who knows what to prioritise and what to ignore.

Posting more is activity.
Running ads is activity.
Booking PR is activity.
Launching a podcast is activity.

None of it is strategy on its own.

Strategy is deciding:
What is the commercial objective?
What deserves investment now?
What can wait?

When you’ve worked inside media businesses, managed national budgets and built campaigns at scale, those decisions don’t take months.

They take someone who already knows the answer.

Most founders don’t need more tactics.
They need experienced judgement.

If I were building a podcast today, I would approach growth like a podcaster.
I’d approach it like a radio Promotions Director.

Because podcasts aren’t just content.
They’re micro-communities.

Your audience:
→ Invites you into their ears
→ Listens while driving, walking, cooking, living
→ Builds trust with you in a way few channels can

That’s powerful.

And when it comes to growth, partnerships or sponsorships, that trust matters more than reach alone. In radio, we never thought in isolation.

We built integrated marketing ecosystems:
• Content
• Promotions
• Partnerships
• Brand alignment
• Creative activations

The same principles apply to podcasts.

It’s not:
“Our podcast is for female business owners scaling beyond $500k so we only partner with business brands.”

It’s:
→ What is the content really about?
→ Who is this audience in real life?
→ What do they value, use, aspire to, or trust?
→ Where could a brand integrate meaningfully into that world?

That’s where smart sponsorship lives.
Not giveaways for the sake of it.
