"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty".
As National Road Safety Week 2026 kicks off, it's a poignant reminder that as long as humans control motor vehicles, there is an ongoing need for education, awareness, behaviour modification, inducements and penalties - a toolbox full of options for dealing with the human condition.
The statistics are damning - the road toll continues to increase, despite dramatic improvements in road technology, vehicle technology and minimum safety requirements. The common denominator - it's us. Fatigue, speeding, drink driving, drug driving, distraction - all variables controlled by us - are the main causes of death on our roads.
We'll be highlighting key facts throughout the week, as well as some of the campaigns we're proud to have been part of over the years, to help increase awareness and change the behaviours that kill.
Today - a damning statistic in itself - a snapshot of fatalities involving heavy vehicles in a five year period. Every dot is a life lost.
