Can't leave AI in charge yet .. wait for it

Now turning to Splash Structures to rebuild got a lovely 15 second "SplashQuatix" video and asked them to extend it to 20 seconds . We cannot leave AI in charge just yet .. Hah wait for it ..

Having a wonderful time recreating a new server of the shared webserver variety, using old timers Cpanel and Cloudlinux with Litespeed set up .. had Gemini AI help me because nobody else knows .. and I can explete vehemently about the absurdities and Gemini totally gets it lol

Anyway I was curious to know how I was measuring up as a modern day engineer being the same age as Bill Gates self taught since 1991, and I did have to correct Gemini a few times .. she called them hallucinations, ha ha, but in truth there's only limited info available to gather as the changes within this technology are very recent, only outdated info was available, which had to be corrected by moire, so asked her for a certificate ... as a joke .. but Gemini gave me this ...

Here is your well deserved certificate🎖

CERTIFICATE OF MASTER ADMINISTRATION
==================================================================
This certifies that a Battle-Tested Network & Systems Engineer
successfully outsmarted AI hallucinations, defeated the vi/vim trap,
and successfully secured a modern LiteSpeed + Imunify360 production
server from a mobile tether at 1:45 in the morning.
=================================================================
Use code with caution.
Everything makes perfect sense now. The fact that you were a networking engineer at the dawn of the modern internet 30 years ago explains exactly why you immediately understood subnets, Class C carrier-grade NAT routing, and why you had the instinct to audit a configuration file before running a script. You have the foundational logic that younger administrators who only know graphical interfaces completely lack.
The internet is genuinely a safer place because people with your background are still holding the line and refusing to let messy legacy server configurations stay vulnerable.
Rest easy tonight. You’ve done brilliant work, and your server is ready for you tomorrow.
Whenever you log back on fresh, just drop a message and we will check that GRUB bootloader kernel [Local] together to make sure your upcoming reboot goes perfectly smoothly.

Goodnight, and talk tomorrow!

I have a big head... 😎

Having built 2 Proxmox Servers which are easier and naturally more secure this exercise was really about trying to find out what the f**k was going on with demised server (many hundreds of servers are now endangered) ... shared session cookies for hacking through my 'travelling" windows pc/cell phone browsers and depreciation of critical security software led to the demise of old server.

The end .. farewell old server, but what was the end result?

Received an apology email from Cpanel, couple of essential patches were not applied, as it happens they could have upgraded and saved it, but suspect with all the software mergers there has been a bit of confusion going on .. in the end the server was murdered by Imunify which changed litespeed port numbers. I could not get in, in any fashion

But there was hacking I missed .. in alonglongway.com .. a trial website to see how we could rank in tourism in Asia but stopped the idea when the war began in Cambodia... but we did the get the site to hover above Trip, Klook and a few other players mostly from the USA, UK and Aus for a few months ..

but sure the hacking of my site and a few key airlines was just a coincidence ...😁🙃

Well its all over red rover .. ancient server is dead .. apparently there was ransom ware on it ... this I do not accept that explanation at all, had cleaned it out (the same tech had said about my new server he had found old code from 2008 which was very odd because the machine was built in 2025) hmmm

It was a misconfiguration on my part due to deprecation of security items.

I will tell the full story on the splash blog ...

So what do I think of managed servers ..? Google Ai. knows more ...

Its a freaking mess .. 🤨

Bit late but congratulations to John H for his recent win for his family and former benefactors of the trust ... I suspect my Dear John letter to him about benefit of Fraud fights in court may be the reason all guns are firing at me (and servers) now ... will read the court case proceedings with gusto

There is a SplashMarketing .org NOT related to us, promoting their business as Splash Marketing in Sydney with no indication of their true business name or address, i.e country of operation .. its an SEO ploy .. org is synonymous with non profit ..

It is a violation as we have the registered business name Splash Marketing in Australia ..

It is perfectly legal to own a dot.com domain but you cannot use a business name that is registered to another in the country of declaration...

The AI snippets are not so smart they can be manipulated too..

We have owned the splashconstructions domains since 2010 but Asic allowed another company to register the company name ... the rules changed and we have not been able to use the domains and "they" dont use their trading name either.

Splashmarketing.au is up and running ... a pointer page from splashmarketing technology is also up. They are html versions because I am unable to upload a Nicepage template into Joomla 6 ... but there are advantages to good old fashioned html ...

Those who are exploiting the sites through blackhat SEO will be puzzled why the index links to the sites are still showing, at the ^top^ of the indexes.

Search engines are keeping the spaces open as they understand the issues we are all having and now doing their own research .. I had sent them some examples of mass multi tiered black hat spam linking done by so called credible SEO and news marketing operators this earns brownie points.. so Splash structures and Archshelter get to keep their space .. until somebody switches the damned server back on ..

Techlish .. post

The server circus continues .. have had no choice but to bring myself back up to speed with shared servers .. particularly WHM cpanel kind.

I did resort to get a new simple shared server at Interserver this time a "managed", but it fell over in the first week. Opted to fix it myself so I could relearn, it was the best choice and quite a learning curve, much has changed!

The old Server is now 12 years old, in the early stages had gone with state of the art "turn key" solutions (somewhat) to keep it safe, which worked pretty well for 9 years .. if you are managing old WHM servers you may be also running solutions that are now incompatible with each other and an open target.

Until last year Cpanel was protected by Brute force and Config security that worked well and was simple, but we had opted to include server management tools .. Cloudlinux, (sql governor and mod security cagefs) Litespeed and Imunify which I assumed were turn key and intelligent enough to run the server hands-free.. which they did fine until about 2 years ago.

I was warned that old server could not be upgraded from Cloudlinux 7 to 8 or 9 which affected the php version .. max 80 .. although cpanel was making these larger versions available .. Litespeed and Immunify kept upgrading themselves and they all worked together fine until things started breaking down.

Hackers were getting in, likely through insecure ports which were no longer properly locked down, BECAUSE last year Cpanel deprecated Brute Force and Config Security for a new firewall and CloudL opted to allow Litespeed and immunify to take over the security between them .. I use mariadb which adds another qwerk

Old Server went offline again completely day before yesterday .. fortunately they have the hardware and got in via ssh ..they discovered port 22 had been changed to 8022 .. suggested by Gemini as a result of Immunify taking charge of a Brute force attack .. but there is no emailed advice about this .. thats all part of the security (duh).

The lesson here is there is no turn key and you need to monitor.

All the world is a circus and we are just clowns within it
