Mungo Man - Australia’s ancient history to be taught in schools across the country

The story that changed our nation forever, rewrote the history books and affirmed Australia’s Aboriginal people as the oldest surviving culture on the planet; is now set to dramatically change the learning landscape of primary and secondary students across the county.

On Saturday November 16, the eve of the two-year anniversary of the historical, Return to Country of Mungo Man, a new nationally aligned Australian ancient history curriculum will be launched....

“Where previously teachers have been teaching ancient Egyptian, Roman, Greek and Chinese history, they will now be able to confidently teach Australian ancient history to Australian children.

“Never before have we been able to provide teachers with such an accurate and culturally approved learning resource. This is a real turning point for all Australians,” - Jenny Bowler

Sarah and I have been very fortunate to have spent the past few months working with The Baird Institute for applied heart and lung surgical research.

In a world first project, The Baird Institute are teaming up with virtual reality start-up Vantari VR to build a tool which will take surgeons on a virtual tour of patients’ bodies prior to heart surgery.

The potential of this technology is revolutionary for the surgical landscape, both as a surgical aid, and when used as a training tool.

The team’s goal is to eventually be able to scan and assess acutely ill patients within minutes on the operating table. This will allow surgeons to visualise their patients’ medical situation in real time; thus enabling them to regard and investigate their condition from various angles prior to operating.

The aim is to improve surgical planning, speed and accuracy, resulting in better outcomes for patients.

Clinical trials are already showing that VR can reduce surgical planning time by up to 40% and increase surgical accuracy by 10%.

The Baird Institute receives no government funding and relies solely on donations for their life-saving work.

At the age of 36 I saw my GP about a jarred finger from a motorcycle accident. As I was leaving her office I mentioned in passing about some chest pains I'd felt during morning training sessions which I was sure was related to my childhood asthma. Two weeks later I was getting my chest opened for a double bypass. Up until that point (for almost two years) my trainer was telling me to push through my chest pain/Angina. I am lucky to be alive.
Instead of stopping my heart for the operation, the surgeon I had instead conducted the finest of surgical techniques on my heart - while it was beating. A skill that was only possible due to the work of organisations like the Baird Institute that train heart surgeons on the latest techniques.
It was an honour to interview the Honourable Michael Kirby and particularly difficult to interview a family who had lost a husband and father to a heart aneurysm.
