According to legend, it was invented by Italian waiters so as not to confuse ordinary espresso with coffee with milk. Such coffee is served in ceramic, porcelain or glass cups. Macchiato, along with other types of coffee with milk, is used as a base in latte art (artistic infusion of foamed milk into espresso).
