From our design archives: A feature project

It seems like a world ago now – working with the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, we delivered the design, typesetting and print production for the Report for the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Ruby Princess.

In March 2020, a number of COVID-19 infected passengers disembarked the Ruby Princess cruise ship in Sydney, spreading the virus across the country – a significant setback in the early days of the pandemic, with devastating consequences for families and communities.

Amid ongoing uncertainty, our brief was to present complex, highly technical findings with absolute clarity so the report could inform better protocols and processes for the future.

Work like this is humbling yet deeply rewarding, knowing the small part we play may assist positive change.

Sneak peek: a snapshot from one of our street banners...

We were briefed by North Sydney Council .sydney to come up with some promotional street banners that would be installed on large light poles throughout the North Sydney CBD and various other locations. They were to reflect the vibrancy and beauty of the area and what it has to offer locals and visitors alike.

The team set about creating a dream sequence montage of sorts, to capture the very essence of what North Sydney has to offer... a celebration of nature-meets-city, harbour, life and everything we love.

We suggested a single word to become the focus – so that the prescribed meaning would become more obscure and subtle but the
elements of the design would work together to communicate a more complete understanding as a whole, but also more open to individual interpretation. The word we settled upon for our initial proposal was “WONDER”. We believed this word would encourage the viewer to embark on a journey through possibilities, opportunities and even dreams of the future. Perhaps even laying the groundwork for a plan for their lives ahead. The final words were chosen after consultation with the team at North Sydney Council and our design process continued.

We drew inspiration from the look of an architectual masterplan and also aesthetically breathtaking birds-eye-view drone visuals. Looking down upon the world as such and mapping out all of the wonderful draw-cards of the area in a beautiful, almost surreal way. Playful, engaging, captivating, encouraging, delightful, and uplifting. The design can say everything we would like it to in an instant but viewers might find it hard not to linger to enjoy all of the entwined layers.

When The Doss House, a great little whiskey bar down at The Rocks in Sydney asked us to design their menus we jumped at the opportunity. The building in which the underground bar is housed has a rich history dating back to Sydney’s formative years. As you descend into the dimly lit space you step back in time, each unique detail a hint to the shady past. The interior is luxurious and opulent – a curated romanticised reincarnation – all offset against the exposed sandstone block walls. It seems like each week we’re adding even more whiskey’s to the already extensive list! Looking forward to our next visit
