Timepieces as Gifts

Did you know the Chinese are very averse to receiving watches and clocks as gifts? This is because the timepiece is thought to symbolize the negative effects of time. The clock represents the passing of time and it’s considered especially inauspicious in your office. If you receive a watch as a gift (especially if it is a birthday gift), you should thank the person that gave it to you and immediately offer a token dollar or coin to nullify any negative effects. This symbolizes that you have “purchased” the watch from whoever gave it to you. It’s okay for parents to give watches to their children as presents, but children should never give watches to their parents or grandparents.

Keeping the Five Elements in Balance

The presence of water, bright lights and plants within the home is what keeps the 5 elements in good balance. It is this that helps to maintain financial stability for the family and for good fortune to continually manifest. Feng shui is about keeping the five elements of water, wood, fire, earth and metal nicely balanced, with no element being either too strong or too weak, or missing altogether. As long as the five elements are present, the vibrancy and auspicious energy of the home environment will be secure.

FENG SHUI GIFTS NOT TO GIVE ...

Giving and receiving gifts is a wonderful exchange that shows we care. One would think that any gift that is given from the heart is good. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. An inauspicious gift is bad news no matter how noble your intentions are. Taken in a Feng Shui perspective, some things are worse compared to others. Here are the top 5 gifts you should never give to anyone.
1. Never Give Sharp Objects

Gifts of sharp objects are actually more popular than one would expect because most people don't see them as such. Examples of sharp objects that are unsuitable as gifts include the following: blade, chainsaw, dagger, hunting knife, letter opener, penknife, scissors, Swiss Army knife, sword, etc (see anything familiar here).

There are a couple of reasons that make sharp items objectionable. Giving sharp objects as a gift will literally sever the friendship. As sharp objects are a natural source of malicious "killing breath" or Shar Chi, such gifts will result in you unintentionally sending bad luck to your friend.

2. Never Give Timepieces

In the West, timepieces are, in fact, quite well-liked as gifts. These include: alarm clock, wall clock, pocket watch, wristwatch, etc.

Timepieces measure the passage of time and this indirectly suggests a limited lifespan, which is very inauspicious. In Chinese (Cantonese), to give a clock sounds exactly like the Chinese term for attending a funeral, which is naturally very taboo.
3. Never Give Red Roses

Did you know that you should never give red roses? Long stemmed red roses with sharp thorns are terrible as gifts. The longer the stem and the sharper the thorns ... the more the relationship will suffer. If you send your lover a bouquet of red roses - romantic and all - it will be the beginning of the end of the relationship.

It is better for you to give cream or pink roses. Feng Shui-wise, yellow roses work even better to help enhance that loving feeling. Remember to have the thorns removed before you deliver them to your lover.

Never send red and white roses to a loved one who is in hospital. These are so inauspicious that in hospitals all over UK, there is the tradition with regards to floral gifts from well-wishers. If bunches of red and white roses or any variety of flowers arrive for anybody, they throw the flowers away immediately and make sure none of them reach the patients. A gift comprising a bunch of red and white blooms is considered to be a DEATH WISH.

4. Never Give Shoes

In Chinese (Cantonese), the word for shoes, 'hai', sounds very much like a sigh. This is very inauspicious as it suggests much unhappiness. A gift of shoes to your friend would be akin to sending bad luck his/her way.

5. Never Give Handkerchiefs

Gifts of handkerchiefs are also traditionally frowned upon. This is because a handkerchief is used to wipe away sweat and tears, which suggests a lot of sadness and frustration. Giving handkerchiefs as gifts suggest that you anticipate him/her to be doing much crying in the future. This generates such an inauspicious chi.

Remedy for Your Predicament

What do you do if you have a really fantastic gift? Something that you know your friend will be truly ecstatic about? Well I have some good news for you. The Chinese have a simple remedy for sharp metal gifts that belong to the first category.

Ask for a coin or some change (make sure it is metal) before you present your gift to the recipient. This simple exchange symbolizes a "purchase", instead of a "gift". Since your friend symbolically "paid" for the item, it is no longer considered a "gift". This uncomplicated remedy works only for sharp metal items.

Wonderful article. Did you know this about torn and dirty clothes.
I must admit as a Fashion Feng Shui Facilitator I did not know this about torn and dirty clothes. Though it is not my personality to go out wearing these type of clothes, those that do should be aware.
Thanks for sharing this info and for enlightening me, Complete Feng Shui

DRESSING FOR SUCCESS ...
Never wear torn and dirty clothes, as this is one of the worst things you can do to undermine your personal Feng Shui. It may be fashionable and cool to wear faded, torn or frayed denim, but be warned that dressing like this brings very bad luck. It attracts poverty and unlucky chi that often translates to severe ill fortune.
Keep yourself well groomed at all times. Don't dress like a slob even if you're just going out to buy a few groceries - you never know who you may bump into? Good grooming doesn't mean dressing in designer clothes or in suits all the time; it merely means presenting a balanced, harmonious look to the world. So before you go out, be sure to at least wash your face, tidy your hair, put on some clean, neat clothes - and you'll be all set to go.
Fresh, clean clothes that have been hung out to dry in the breeze during daylight have absorbed yang energies that add positive vibes to your appearance. As said in a previous article, try not to hang out your washing at night or in enclosed or shady places, as they will not be able to benefit from the purifying yang energy of day.
Beautiful accessories and jewellery decorated with lucky symbols serve to add zest to your wardrobe as well as bring you good fortune wherever you go. Wearing jackets, scarves, shawls, earrings, pendants and rings that feature the celestial dragon, the beautiful phoenix, the wealth ship, Chinese coins, the arrowana, etc. is a great way to enhance your personal Feng Shui.
Ladies did you know you could use make-up to improve the Feng Shui of your facial features? To the Chinese, a face with good Feng Shui is said to have full cheeks, small but full lips, full but gently curved jaws and fine, well-shaped eyebrows. The eyes should not be set too close together, and the cheeks must not be gaunt and sunken. So, wield that makeup brush to sculpt and create for yourself a more auspicious countenance!

Hello, my dear friends,

In Qigong, we are studying and working with energy: how it works in the world and in the body, and how we can use that understanding to benefit ourselves and the world.

In SFQ Level 1, we learn that "anything and everything in the world contains all the information of the universe."
And those who practice the Five Element Healing Movements learn that simply by understanding the nature and relationship of the five elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, we can "understand the formation of energy in the body and in the universe."

The people who developed Qigong thousands of years ago realized certain emotions relate to certain organ systems.

So, if there’s too much of that emotion, that tells you its corresponding energy-system has problems, and when you indulge in that emotion too much or too strongly, it harms that energy-system.

Here, we’re not talking about “good” or “bad,” “right” or “wrong,” but simply the observations Qigong Masters have made for thousands of years about how the body works, and how the mind and emotions relate to that.

These Masters wanted to know how these things worked so they could enjoy perfect health for a long life.

They noticed long ago that as spring comes, many people get liver problems.
As summer comes, many people get heart problems.
As fall comes, many people get lung problems.
And as winter comes, many people get kidney problems. Winter is the season of residing in the root, and in Qigong, the kidneys are like the root of the body.

We are born in the world and we live in it; we are in the world, and the world is in us;

In Chinese Five Element Theory, the Five Elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are used to describe many things and the way they interact with each other, including the seasons and the organ systems of the body.

If you can imagine how one Element transforms into the next in that cycle, you can understand a lot about our world.

Imagine –

When you have Wood, it feeds Fire.

Fire’s burning generates ash, to nourish Earth.

Earth condenses to generate Metal. If you imagine

Metal as concentrated Earth, condensing more and more, out of that condensation arises Water.

Water nourishes Wood to continue the cycle.

You can see this easily in the seasons.

Spring is Wood, summer Fire, late summer Earth, fall Metal, and winter Water.

But you can see this in the body, too!

In Spring Forest Qigong, we explain this in terms of emotions (like in the Five Element Qigong Healing Movements course). That course not only teaches healing movements, but fuses them with specific positive emotions to amplify their healing power.

When we feel happy, it’s usually about something. When we have so much happiness (liver energy system), we can express joy – happiness for no reason at all.

When there is so much joy (heart energy system ), it is like the explosion of fireworks or the blossoming of thousands of flowers.

In the wake and after the echoes of that joy, peace (spleen/stomach energy system)follows.

In the fullness of deep peace, we feel satisfaction, contentment (lung energy system)

Knowing contentment, we are moved to express gratitude (kidney energy system)

These are the Five Elements at work in the body and in our world.

Many Blessings,
Chunyi Lin
