Sketch Group

Sketch Group We use sketching to tell stories, solve problems, explain ideas, and capture conversations. We sketch stuff. We're pretty good at it!

For example:
* we create hand-drawn videos that make dry or complex information fun or easy to understand
* we live sketch your conference or event
* we capture your ideas and turn them into a powerful one-page sketch
* we run training sessions to teach you how to sketch like a pro

Today we pause to acknowledge National Sorry Day — a day to remember the Stolen Generations, honour their resilience, and reflect on the ongoing journey toward healing and truth.

We throw around the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words" — but when it comes to education, it might actually be an understatement.

Visual metaphors are one of the most powerful tools for making complex ideas click. When you pair the right image with the right concept, something shifts — abstract becomes tangible, confusion becomes clarity, and information becomes something people actually remember.

And the best part? This doesn't just apply to the classroom. Whether you're training a team, pitching an idea, or explaining a process to stakeholders — the principle is the same. If your audience can see it, they can understand it. If they can understand it, they'll act on it.

We've pulled together some of our favourite examples of visual metaphors in action. Swipe through and see for yourself how much a single image can carry.

💡 What's the most memorable visual explanation you've ever come across? Drop it in the comments — we'd love to know.

Every artist has an origin story — and Eddie Chau's is a good one. We're thrilled to introduce him in our latest "Meet the Artist" instalment, where he takes us through how his love of drawing shaped the creative career he has today. Read on as he shares his journey in his own words.

“As a child, the lounge room floor and dining table were my favourite spots at home, and Derwent pencils were my friends. I had my super hero comics and model spaceships next to me and I would draw my beloved characters until it was time for lunch or dinner.

This fueled me into becoming an artist for a living. I spent most of my professional career working for advertising agencies, marketing companies and a few design studios. Centering on producing storyboards and conceptual art and art for print

I also had a hobby job as a Zumba instructor teaching dance fitness in a few gyms and in private classes.
So currently my interests are in 'explain it illustrations' where I love visually representing a client's thought processes, and drawing cars of all types, the shinier the better!”

How do you capture a training day so that the learnings stick long after the room empties?

At the start of a new term, staff at South Melbourne Primary School gathered for a full day of professional learning — packed with strategies, frameworks, and big ideas. Our job was to capture it all in real time through live graphic recording, turning a day of conversation into a visual artefact that could keep living long after the room emptied.

We stepped into the room as the graphic recorder, listening, synthesising in real time, and translating complex ideas into clear visual metaphors that would resonate with educators.

There's nothing quite like a room full of people who speak the same language.

The Sketch Group team attended the Conference in Kansas City recently, LiveSketching in real-time the keynote presentations and visualising “wild” business ideas from EOS attendees with our IdeaSketch™.

We loved chatting with founders, integrators, and visionaries about something that gets us genuinely excited: how our Visual Operating System (VOS™) can bring companies running on EOS to life.

EOS gives businesses an incredible framework to operate by — and when you pair that with the power of visual artefacts, teams actually see the business they're building.

If we got to connect with you and sketch out your business idea — we hope you loved seeing it come to life!

In our next instalment of our “Meet the Artist” series, we’re thrilled to introduce Christopher Wood:

"Hi! My name is Christopher Wood and I’m a comic artist, cartoonist and commercial illustrator. I grew up in Whadjuk Noongar country and have connections to the Worrorra peoples up in the Kimberley. Drawing was the first thing I was ever obsessed with as a kid so when I got my big break at the start of the pandemic I never looked back. Across my career I’ve worked with clients all over the world in publishing, editorial, advertising and in the public sector. I work digitally in Clip Studio and Procreate, with much of my preliminary sketches and notes on pencil and paper. More and more I’m focused on work that feels hand drawn, where my idiosyncrasies as an artist become an asset. No matter what kind of drawing the project needs, I want to draw people that you can connect with.”
