The new financial year hits different for me than January ever does.

Something about July 1 just makes me want to actually sit down and look at everything. Not just the financial stuff, all of it.

How the work fits around the kids, the homeschooling, our chaotic life. Whether what I'm doing day to day is actually working or whether I'm just keeping up.

This new FY my goals have nothing to do with numbers. I want more structure. More routine. Systems that don't fall apart the second life gets busy and with two little ones at home, a FIFO partner and a business to run, life is always a little bit busy.

Less starting from scratch every week. More breathing room. That's what July looks like for me.

Every time I take on a new social media client the first thing I do is sit with their Instagram for a while.

I want to tell you about the version of social media that most small business owners are living in.

The most important part of building your website has nothing to do with design.

Before I open Squarespace. Before I pick a colour or a font or even think about what the homepage might look like, I ask my clients a lot of questions.

Not a quick checklist. A proper sit down with a coffee kind of questionnaire that makes some people realise things about their own business they hadn't put into words before.

Seven years ago I was living in a Chevy Express campervan travelling across Canada with a laptop, a wi-fi hotspot and an idea I kept putting off.

I told myself I needed more experience. A course. A qualification. Something that would make me feel ready.

Eventually I just started anyway. Not because I felt ready, because we needed to fund our travels and I (and my supportive partner) backed myself enough to try.

That business was called Virtually Amber. It looked nothing like what it is today. And I had absolutely no idea what the next seven years would hold.

Now in Australia, a mum to a five year old and a two year old, running Wild Soul Digital from honestly wherever I can find a quiet moment. And I'm still figuring it out as I go.
