Many small businesses who do not have a website still rely on online service directories like Hipages to get business.
Let me first explain how Hipages works.
Consumers post a job on the Hipages website which is then sent to relevant local businesses as a lead. Before a business is able to quote on a particular job and communicate with the customer, they must pay for the lead.
This however does NOT guarantee they will win the work. Other businesses which have accepted the lead are also competing for the job. What's more, there is no obligation for the consumer to follow through with any of the quotes they receive.
Bottom line is that the business is paying for a lead they may not win.

Why you should not google your own business name?
As crazy as this sounds, you should never google your own business name.
We are all guilty of it, admit it! And why wouldn't you do it? Don't we all want to see our reputation online?
Truth is if 10 people searched your company name, all ten of them will get 10 different results. Google takes into account their location, device, search history and many other factors to determine the results they are delivered.
Let me give you an example.
If I googled Creative Minds Webdesign twice a week for 30 days and never clicked on my website or even worse clicked on my competitor's website, Google will assume two things:
1. My website is NOT relevant to my query
2. My competitor's website is the better result in the search
Over time, Google will learn my behaviour and show me less and less of my website.
Eventually, this will negatively impact my own website rankings.
So if you are ever tempted to Google yourself, please make sure you click on your website to show Google you are the ultimate winner.

Why your business needs a website?
I spoke to a hair salon owner this week and asked her why she does not have a website. She replied: "I already have enough business! I don't need a website."
Even if she had more clients that she could handle, she will still need a website and here is why:
• A website will answer all the questions her customers may have and save her hours on the phone
• A booking system on her website will automate her appointments schedule
• A website can still generate sales through selling her hair products online even during lockdown

Many local Mornington Peninsula small business owners come to us having built their websites on platforms like WIX or Squarespace. Those platforms are easy to use and a cheap option for startups. They will generate enough leads if the business has a storefront or the business is driving traffic through Social Media or word of mouth.

Strange times that we are living in and everyone is feeling it. The Mornington Peninsula Shire is offering a "Business Online Initiatives Grant". We are not sure if this is unprecedented, all we know is this is awesome. Do you or someone you know need a website for a business? How about an upgrade to an old website? Well this grant goes a long way creating that. Here's what the Shire says,
