"Marketing is a team sport."

Those who've worked with me know that's my saying — by which I mean I really believe the best outcomes happen in collaboration.

This month, I've written a piece about a 'Brand Bestie' — those trusted souls who are your sounding board, your mirror, and your loudest cheerleader. Every small business needs one. And it feels only fair that I introduce you to mine.

Meet Tamara de Lange of Bloom'n Events Co.

T and I have worked together, on-and-off, for over 20 years. We're working on something exciting together right now — but to me, she's so much more than "work".

She's the one who tells me the truth when an idea needs reworking. She regularly talks me down when the to-do list gets loud, and reminds me why I started on this consulting path. The feedback always lands, because I trust it's coming from a place of genuine care. And that, more than any marketing know-how, is what makes a real Brand Bestie.

Having started on my own small business path, I now understand why having someone like this in your corner is critical.

Go and follow the brilliant work at Bloom'n Events Co.

When you think of 'cutting edge brand strategy', you don’t think of kids' sport - and DEFINITELY don't think of pony club. But an exercise with Gidgegannup Horse & Pony Club in 2025 showed that it’s important, no matter what the organisation.

I’ve been involved with equestrian sports my whole life. In my late teens, I was drawn from competition to the camaraderie and fun of Pony Club. Fast forward a few years (only a few years, mind!) and I find that I’ve been involved with Gidgegannup Horse & Pony Club for nearly 10 years – it’s a great club with wonderful people.

But, with other sport codes gaining strength, the quest for club survival was more important than ever.

At the beginning of 2025, the club engaged the talented Sandy Taylor to help the committee develop a direction. After an extensive survey, we found that people became involved with Gidge for one reason – fun and friendship. Nothing to do with sport, nothing to with competition, nothing to do with facilities. It was about community, both with humans and their horses.

So, a marketing strategy was developed that deliberately played into that sentiment. The socials were highly intentional, showcasing the amazing community, the fun activities and the friendships formed. The website reflected this and everything started to align.

Social media audience grew, website visitation grew and enquiry grew. But beyond the vanity metrics the REAL stuff grew - our membership increased by 12% year-on-year. And that's dollars in our bank account.

Gidge is currently the strongest pony club in the region and is right up there as one of the most sustainable in the state.

It was a masterclass in the strength of a great product, an aligned team, a solid brand foundation and consistent messaging. It doesn't matter if it's a small business or a local sporting club, the principle is the same.

Now that it’s over for another year, have you ever wondered why some MAFS couples last and most spectacularly fail? 💔 It's all about foundation (or lack, thereof).

Turns out, your marketing isn't much different. Throwing campaigns out there without a solid brand foundation is like saying "I do" to a stranger – exciting at first, but often ends in tears and a very public split!

Without knowing your core values, your true audience, and what makes you uniquely YOU, your marketing is just... winging it. And let's be real, no one wants their business to be the next MAFS divorce statistic.

This month’s blog is all about building the best version of your brand with a strong foundation. Head over to the website to read the full musings.

Hi there. I’m Sarah.

I much prefer sitting behind the scenes, working away on marketing strategy and rolling out campaigns. But for this post, I’m putting myself in front of the camera – because I want to introduce you to Splendid Wren Marketing.

Splendid Wren Marketing is something that has been bubbling away since last year. After 20+ years of working alongside small business owners, I found that there was one common thread that weaved through every conversation: the overwhelming, often daunting, challenge of marketing. And it’s not a skill thing – it’s a structure thing.

Endless platforms, ever-changing algorithms, and the grind to create engaging content. It’s daunting enough as a someone who specialises in marketing but when it’s not your core skill it's enough to make even the most passionate entrepreneur feel exhausted. This stuff was supposed to make life easier, wasn’t it?

So, here’s what Splendid Wren Marketing is working on. A platform that has all your small business brand and marketing resources in one spot, supported by a real human. Is it perfect? No. Is it going to take away every marketing woe? Probably not. But we’re here to give it a go.

If you want to know more, head over the website. Or if you’d like to chat, we can do that too. Let’s just start.
