Universal Favourite is looking for a Mid / Senior Designer / Design Director (depending on experience) to join our Sydney studio.

We are looking for people who are exceptionally talented, curious, and thoughtful. We care deeply about the work, but we care just as much about how we work together day-to-day, being smart, easygoing, hardworking and genuinely collaborative.

We recently teamed up with The Volte and eBay Australia on their first-ever consumer campaign, helping reframe clothing as an income-generating asset. Enter “Fit Cheques to Fat Cheques”, a playful spin on the viral fit check trend that encourages shoppers to list their new buys for rent or resale with just one tick at checkout. Welcome, James! 👋

We’re thrilled to announce James Cooper has joined the Universal family internationally, as our new Head of Creative Partnerships!

Supporting UF’s client partners and growing presence from Sydney to Seoul to San Francisco, James brings 17 years working in brand, creative businesses, and publicly-listed companies to UF. From Shopify to Sydney Film Fest, eBay to Air NZ, Netflix to NSW Gov - he’s helped make and shape local and global brands as a trusted client partner, strategist, and storyteller for almost two decades.

A passionate advocate for the creative life, James is also an accomplished musician - regularly performing as a drummer, DJ, as well session musician and presenter for artists and festivals including Edinburgh Fringe, Field Day, and Burning Man.

In August, the doors to ‘s very first store opened in Blok M, Jakarta. For him, it was a moment to start a new chapter. For us, it was a moment of pride, seeing how far he has come and knowing we helped him along the way. Like any proud parent, we can only cheer him on as he dives headfirst into whatever comes next. His story is only getting started, and we’re excited to see where he takes it 🚀✨✨✨

Each extension gives another stage. A functional menu becomes playful when he insists on pulling it down. A quiet moment is filled with music when he reaches for the Butterlodion. A passing detail becomes lore when he shares stories of dancing with Emperor Lotus Biscoff. Everything adds up to a living, expanding world.

The product experience blends play and provenance. Handles shaped like butter whips make carrying a box part of the fun, while Butter Baby hides inside, waiting to say “hebbo!” when you least expect it. Inside, desserts carry their own stories; cold brew from the shimmering lakes of Coffee World, sugar mined fresh from the Great Sugar Cluster or pistachio from the Pistacho Nebula. Design, flavour, and lore all working together to bring the Butterlandian universe to life.

is the head chef, mascot, and smarts behind it all. With his butter whip, starburnt cheeks, and expressive face, we set out to design a character that felt irresistibly cute yet unmistakably his own.

From there, the universe unfolded. We wrote lore, mapped backstories, and even created a Butterlandian language to shape how he, and the brand, speaks. It means the brand is never tied to a single look or line, but instead has an endless pantry of stories to draw from. One day it might be “Out of this World Desserts, “ the next, it’s Jakarta’s humbalubs shouting “hebbo!” to their newest chumbalums.

An adorable butter alien from another planet set the stage for a brand story like no other.

a brave explorer from the paradise planet Butterlandia, travelled through space to save his home. He discovered weird and wonderful worlds before eventually crash-landing on Earth, where he found rich, abundant butter and friendly humans, or as he called them ‘humblabubs’. Captivated, he decided to stay and share his traditional Butterlandia treats from his humble store in Blok M, Jakarta.

Our task was to take our client’s initial narrative, build in lore, craft the Butter Baby character, and transform it into a distinctive and out-of-this-world brand identity. Somewhere between strategy and sci-fi, the result was the creation of valuable IP and a brand world that extends far beyond desserts.
