The Babekühl calendar project: August.

This month, we’re terraforming with After Effects. Built as a motion design experiment, this loop explores how procedure noise, fractal displacement and layered blurs and gradients can combine to create complex, evolving movement with a few simple tools.

When we first started out in motion design, creating organic, textured and fluid movements with software alone was virtually unthinkable. But as the software continually evolves, so does our relationship to it - always unlocking new creative possibilities.

JULY 2026

This month, the calendar takes a hydration break.
We’ve swapped our usual format for a World Cup-inspired experiment, reimagining the home shirts of thirteen national teams with an entirely new graphic and typographic system.

Part kit concept, part identity study, part excuse to obsess over football for a few weeks.

Type is one of the fundamentals of great design. Whilst we consider ourselves generalists more than type design specialists, sometimes when building a visual language, a custom-designed font is exactly what’s required - Particularly in film and brand work, where bespoke titling can define an entire world.

Some of these showcase the core A–Z characters, others are more extensive with full glyph sets.

As for our process, many of the illustrative fonts started life on paper before being redrawn in vector using Flash. A tool originally designed for vector animation that we have always intuitively misused as a brilliant illustrative instrument (Now called adobe animate). FontSelf then codifies the character set into a system-recognised font, a .TTF file ready for production. 🔠🔤🔡

The Babekühl Calendar Project: June

Six months down, six to go, with the Winter Solstice just over the horizon.

This month’s offering emerged from a prolonged sparring session with an old adversary (Photoshop). Somewhere in the struggle, a small cosmic event materialised…

All Eyez on Jonti. His record sounds amazing. A preview of what’s to come 🌙🗡️.
Facts: Anyone who saw Jonti live at Sydney Opera House in 2024 would have caught an early iteration of this Hyperdelic visual.

The Babekühl Calendar Project: May

This month in the studio, unreleased and somewhat secret magnum opus has been on repeat.

Over the past three years, we’ve been working closely with Jonti to realise the visual world for the forthcoming concept album - spanning visualisers, music videos, a live show, and whatever other ideas emerge along the way.

Dowloadable files in the biodome.

We’re looking forward to sharing more soon. In the meantime, here are a series of visual experiments that have grown out of that world.

Raiding our design archive and revisiting some early favourites: this identity system and branding was developed for our friends at Sonar Music at their founding and has remained one of our favourite projects.

What began as a typographic experiment - drawing from MIDI grids, patch bays, and modular synthesis interfaces, evolved into a mono-pixel type system, complete with a full (and largely unseen) letter set.

It also marked one of our first forays into 3D, where the system’s rigid geometry naturally extended into extrusion, depth, and light.

The Babekuhl Calendar Project: April

This month, we’re sharing the fruits of a commercial project that, through a series of happy mistakes and experiments, led us to a new image-making technique.

The final image evolved from an approach we’ve been developing around ASCII-generated video; extended here into fully customised, miniature compositions. Flick through to see some of the process that brought us here.

To bring it together, we returned to a trusted colouring method - extracting a palette from a reference image. With a heavy heart, we’ve drawn from a photograph by our old friend and studio-mate. You’ll be missed, Jimmy.
