So last night was the big reveal.

Would I come home with the coveted trophy?

Sadly, no.

But not all was lost.

It was a great night at La Montage, and I managed to bust a myth. Apparently, you don’t have to buy the fancy tickets to win. I counted at least five winners who weren’t even there on the night.

I caught up with some great business owners, cheered when the boys from Oliveti won their category, taught the Mayor how to take a selfie 🤫, had a laugh with Naomi over a very strange Uber ride home, chatted with Gianni from the Five Dock Chamber and caught up with the lovely team from Canada Bay Council who sponsored the event.

I also briefly pretended I’d won while standing at the photo wall. Highly recommend.

Would I have liked the trophy? Of course.

But honestly, nights like these are a good reminder that showing up is worth it. You reconnect with people, meet new ones, celebrate others’ wins and have a few laughs along the way.

Thanks to everyone who voted, cheered me on and sent lovely messages over the past few weeks. Feels like a win in itself.

Maybe next year. 😉

Everyone bangs on about consistency. Me included. Why because it works.
But what kind of consistency are we actually talking about?

It’s not
– Posting daily until you want to chuck your phone across the room
– Showing up on every platform and stretching yourself thin
- Posting for the hell of it or to 'go viral' whatever that means.

Real consistency on LinkedIn looks like

- Saying the same thing using different angles and perspectives.
- Sounding like you (even if you use AI)
- Showing up and engaging with your network
- Being crystal clear about who you help, what you do and how you do it.

Truth bomb

You can post every single day and still confuse the hell out of people.
You can show up everywhere and still not be trusted.
And confusion and lack of trust means what? That’s right – no leads, no sales.

So, before you get caught up in the posting treadmill, ask:

✨ What do I want to be known for?
✨ Am I making it easy for people to get me?
✨ Do people understand what I actually do and how I can help them?
✨ Are people clear about what I offer (sell).

Consistency is more than a posting schedule. It’s about building relationships, clarity about what you do and sticking to your lane so people know how you can help them.

Want help to nail your LinkedIn presence and content strategy? That’s what I do.

A plumber with a leaky tap.

A bookkeeper who's behind in their invoices.

A personal trainer who hasn’t trained all month.

And yes, sometimes…

A marketer with a website that needs work. (OOPS)

The thing you do for other people is often the thing you neglect in your own business.

Sound familiar???
Why?

You’re too close to it.

You know too much.
You’ve changed your mind seven times.
You're such an expert you've forgotten what it's like to be new to your world.
You’ve got client work to finish.
And updating your own website keeps sliding down the list, quietly judging you from an open Chrome tab.

But today, when content is being pumped out like no one's business, you can't afford to ignore your website.

Despite the argument, my business runs on referrals anyway.

Your website is often where people go to check the receipts.

They’ve seen your post.
They’ve heard you speak.
Someone has mentioned your name.
AI has served you up.
A referral has landed.

Then they go looking.

And if your website no longer reflects what you do, who you help or why you’re worth choosing, it creates a tiny wobble.

Just enough for them to pause. Question. Click somewhere else.
Wondering if their mate John has lost their mind recommending you.

Poor John, what did he do??

"I have so much to say, I don't know where to start."

I hear this constantly. And my first thought is always: no, you don't.

You have a lot of unfiltered material. That's different. Having too much to say and having nothing to say are the same crisis dressed differently — one shows up as a blank page, the other shows up as 800 words that somehow say nothing. Both are a message problem, and both come from the same place: no clear sense of what your core idea is, who needs to hear it, or why it matters more than the other twelve things you could say instead.

The people who always know what to say aren't more articulate. They just made some decisions earlier in the process.

In 11 years of running my own business, I still suck at networking events when someone asks what I do. Over the years I've tried many versions.

Attempt 1:
"I'm a brand messaging and marketing strategy consultant who helps service businesses align their communications with their core value proposition."

Technically accurate. YAWN. The verbal equivalent of beige.

Attempt 2:
"I help businesses with their websites, LinkedIn, and marketing."

Blunter. Cleaner. Still somehow manages to say everything and nothing at once. But I still whack it out when I can't be bothered explaining.

Attempt 3:
"You know that feeling when you're talking to a business and something just... clicks? Like you immediately get what they do, why it matters and why you havef to work with them? I create that."

Warmer. Getting somewhere. Also works better after one drink.

Attempt 4:
"I help really good businesses stop looking like sh*tty ones."

Wrote that on a Post-it once. Stuck it on my monitor. Still there.

Attempt 5:
"You're awesome at what you do. Your marketing doesn't show it. That gap costs you. I help you close it."

Better.

Here's the thing I've noticed after years of doing this work: getting to the version that actually lands takes time. For me, apparently 11 years and counting. It's because I'm too close to it. For most of my clients, it takes a few good conversations and a bit of digging.

It's buried under years of trying to sound professional (like, what does that even mean??), or not wanting to seem too much, or just never having had someone ask the right questions.

Which version made you pay attention?

If you want to find yours — you know where to find me.

Is it easier to become your own boss now?

Yes.

And also… no.

When I started my business 11 years ago, I thought Canva was the biggest thing since sliced bread.

Suddenly, I could make my own graphics. Was I a designer? Absolutely not.

Were my first designs good? Also no. They were terrible. Good attempt. But still baaaad!

But when you’re starting out on a shoestring budget, access to a tool that helps you do something faster and free seems like a no-brainer.

And that’s where technology has and continues to change the game.

Today, you can start a business with tools that help you:

-build a website
-create content
-send invoices
-manage projects
-book meetings
-automate admin
-design assets
-schedule social posts
-write drafts
-research ideas
-connect your systems

A good tech stack gives you time back.

And in the early days of business, time is often your most precious resource. Definitely invest in tools.
Less faffing around. More creating, connecting, marketing, selling and serving.

So yes, technology has absolutely made it easier to start. But has it made it easier to build a good business?

That’s where I think we need to pause.

Because access to tools does not equal skill. Canva does not make you a designer.

A scheduling tool does not make you strategic. AI does not make you a good marketer, writer, leader or business owner by default.

It can help, yes. It absolutely can speed things up, organise your thinking, spark ideas, draft content and help you get unstuck.

But it can also make people move faster without thinking harder.

And that’s the bit I’m watching closely.

Ask someone why they chose a certain message, strategy, offer, audience or campaign idea and too often the answer is basically:

“ChatGPT told me.”

That’s not strategy. That’s outsourcing your judgement.

So yes, I do think entrepreneurship is more achievable now. And it's smart. Everyone. And I mean everyone. Should be thinking about how they can diversify their income.

The tools are better. The barriers are lower. The access is incredible. And man is it quick.

But becoming your own boss still takes critical thinking, resilience, decision-making and a strong filter for what makes sense for your business.

Technology can open the door. AI can help you move faster. But you still need to know why you’re walking through it.

Ever wondered what marketing help actually looks like — beyond the buzzwords and big promises?

Here’s how I make it work for real humans:

Step 1: We start with you.
Your goals. Your voice. The way your brain works. What your business needs.

Step 2: Then I strip it back to what’s practical.
Clear, doable actions that fit your business rhythm.

The result?
Marketing that feels like you and actually works.

Most times you don’t need to be on every platform, doing all the things.
You need clarity on what works for you.

And that’s what a good strategy does — it cuts through the confusion so you can stop second-guessing and start showing up knowing you're on the right path.

If your marketing’s been feeling messy, heavy, or just too hard to keep up with…
Let’s fix that before next year kicks off.

Let’s be real... Is LinkedIn helping you grow your business, or is it just another thing on your to-do list?

If it’s the latter, we need to fix that. You're not tapping into it's full-potential.

Think of LinkedIn as a tool to grow your business, build real connections and be known for what you're good at.

Here’s how to turn LinkedIn into something that works for you:

👉🏻 Set up your profile to sell—like you would your homepage
When someone lands on your profile, does it guide them to the next step? Make sure it’s clear who you are, what you offer, and why they should stick around. Think of it like your website homepage—every part should point people toward what's next.

👉🏻 Have conversations
It’s not about posting just to post. Focus on having real conversations. Share insights, ask questions and hype people up. When you seek out conversation expecting nothing in return, that's where stronger, lasting relationships begin.

👉🏻Do what works for you
You’re a busy business owner—you don’t have hours to spend creating content. Stick to a minimum commitment that fits your schedule, whether that’s posting once a week or checking in daily to have a few conversations. Consistency is key, but it has to work for your life. If you can only show up once a week - make it count.

LinkedIn can be a powerful business growth tool and right now, lots of business owners tell me their business is slow.

You know what the anecdote to that is? Getting busy on LinkedIn. Staying visible so when people need what you do, you're the one that springs to mind.

On the weekend, I visited a Highland cow experience as part of my 52 weeks of fun challenge.

I was obsessed, obviously. LOL.

But it was also a good reminder that fun feeds the soul.

And for creative types, it’s an absolute MUST.

Getting out of your normal routine, doing something a bit random, and giving your brain something else to focus on is the ultimate creative hack.

You come back with more energy, more perspective, and often better ideas.

So while feeding fluffy cows may not be a formal business strategy, it should be. Haha.

What’s one fun thing you’ve done lately?
Do you pop time for it in your calendar?

P.S - cow selfie on point 🤣

Should you go to a B N I group?
Depends 🤣
Here’s my thoughts on the pitch though.
