𝗪𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗲𝘀.
Normally we wouldn’t. (There are 3 reasons why).
Our family hasn’t traditionally observed Halloween in a big way. This year we decided to get into the spirit.
Of course, that involves becoming something you’re not…
… a monster.
… a ghoul.
… a pumpkin?
Authenticity and congruence of character is a value we hold dear. We don’t like to wear masks.
What does that mean, practically speaking?
When you talk to me in a business setting, it should be approximately the same “me” you get at the pub.
Equally, the father picking up his kids at the school should be approximately the same guy you’ll find on the basketball court on a Thursday night.
When we cross paths in a tense board room, you’ll get the same version of me that sits down at a family gathering.
3 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 “𝘆𝗼𝘂” 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:
1. You can remain true to your core values. Always.
2. You never expend energy trying to maintain “an act.”
3. You reduce the risk of creating an expectations gap for those around you.
Of course, some things will always change, given the environment:
- the type of language you use,
- dress code expectations; and
- your role and the expertise you are expected to offer.
But no matter the context, there should be a core set of values you carry with pride.
You shouldn’t suddenly become a ghoul, or a pumpkin just because you’ve changed from business exec to doting parent to Saturday night beer swiller.
Are you as proud of the “business you” as you are of the “clocked off you”?
