FFmpeg 9.0 is officially released, codenamed "Lei," a name chosen to honor the late Dr. Lei Xiaohua from Communication University of China.

Between 2013 and 2016, he authored a wealth of tutorials on FFmpeg, audio and video encoding/decoding, and transport protocols, helping countless developers get started.

In 2016, he tragically passed away suddenly.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of his death, and FFmpeg pays tribute to him with this major release.

Lei Xiaohua can be regarded as the enlightener of Chinese audio and video developers, a representative figure in spreading FFmpeg technical knowledge in Chinese, and a shared technical guide for a generation of developers.

A major milestone for open media formats just happened. 🎥🐧

The last remaining patent covering MPEG-4 Visual, also known as MPEG-4 Part 2, has officially expired.

The final patent was held in Brazil and expired on July 19, 2026, meaning the entire MPEG-4 Visual standard is now free from patent restrictions worldwide.

That includes popular formats and codecs such as DivX and Xvid, which are now entirely patent-free.

MPEG-4 Visual has been around for decades and played a huge role in the early days of digital video. Seeing its final patent finally expire is a big moment for the open-source and software communities.

Just remember, this applies to MPEG-4 Part 2. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is a different standard and still has active patents expected to expire by 2030.
