A heartfelt shoutout to Melinda Shelley on Literacy Day

Today, on this special occasion of , we want to take a moment to shine a brilliant spotlight on a remarkable individual who's making an indelible mark in her community. Allow me to introduce you to the incredible Melinda Shelley.

Melinda Shelley: The Beacon of Literacy! Melinda is not just a volunteer; she's a beacon of hope and opportunity for the young minds in our community. She firmly believes that every child, from the tiniest baby to the most curious toddler, deserves the gift of literature to pave their path toward a brighter future. She is the driving force behind ""123 Read 2 Me"" (https://123read2me.org.au/), a literacy organization that's changing lives, one book at a time. Through her tireless dedication, she's fostering a love for reading that will stay with these children throughout their lives. She knows that literacy isn't just about words on a page; it's about empowering young hearts and minds. Her organisation is a place where dreams take root, where knowledge flourishes, and where futures are transformed.

Why are we saying we reward our company's behaviour x (usually something virtuous), whilst continuing to reward behaviour y (usually something damaging). Having seen first hand what really gets rewarded in tertiary education - i.e. research, publication and revenue building activity at the students' expense rather than improved student outcomes, this one is particularly close to my soul. As leaders, regardless of sector be it education, corporate, small business, please let's start focusing on better real outcomes for those we're claiming to help, not just on building the status of our own empires. Real student, employee or client focus ultimately leads to greater success for them which ultimately reflects on the institutions that gave rise to that success.

Companies often encourage the bad behavior that executives publicly rebuke—usually in pursuit of short-term performance. What keeps leaders from truly aligning incentives and goals? asks James Heskett.

I should be staggered to learn that 57% of Australian businesses have been overdoing their company's green credentials to the point of being intentionally misleading. Sadly, I'm not. Been there, seen it all before. If you're really doing the right environmental thing, find a great comms person across the rules to help you structure your claims. If, however, for example, you're asking your team or your 3PL to remove the plastic from your goods prior to shipping to remain in line with your 'organic brand essence', you might want to think again. Sustainability starts with you making a difference, not just wanting to selling more.

Here's what you need to know about the ACCCs new guidelines.

It’s no secret that consumers have become more eco-conscious in recent years, leading to an influx of brands creating sustainable products across virtually every industry.

So AI - yep, I know. There are so many pieces focusing on how it will take all our jobs or how amaaaaazing it is. Yada yada. BUT...here's a truly interesting piece I found that talks in depth about what generative AI really might be able to help you with, to get you thinking differently in your business. Just some words of caution - check what it tells you/creates for accuracy and Oh and
PS: if you're a marketer, don't despair, it's not coming for your job anytime soon.
