I don't feel old enough to say this, but I've passed the 25-year mark of my career. Looking back, it’s been shaped by five factors that might resonate with you too:
1. Follow your curiosity – it’ll lead you to new and unexpected places.
2. Build relationships with amazing people who inspire and support you.
3. Share discoveries to benefit others - knowledge grows when shared.
4. Be ready to jump on opportunities when they appear - stay open and prepared.
5. Turn ideas into reality - commercialise discoveries to sustain and grow momentum, creating real impact.
From my early days as a professional musician, to diving deep into the world of media and PR, my career has been anything but linear.
In this next phase, my latest adventure has been nurturing a life-long curious spark into a purpose-filled inferno. For the past two years, I've been immersed in part-time postgrad studies in Mental Health and Neuroscience at UniSC's Thompson Institute.
Next year, I'm making a significant change.
After 13 years of wonderful, intense, always-on work running The Comms Department, I'll be mostly pausing my work in this role in 2025 to focus on completing my studies (note the “mostly”, I have a few consulting projects I’ll still be involved with.)
Overall, my aim is to use this new neuroscientific knowledge, combined with all the skills learnt over my career to date, to help others cultivate happier and healthier brains, minds and lives.
So, what comes next?
Another book is on its way but, beyond that, time will tell. Several ideas are formulating but I suspect my future work will have a layering of media and PR, steeped in sharing discoveries to impact perceptions and behaviour, while always incorporating the five factors – curiosity-led, community-focused, sharing what I learn, staying open and prepared, and turning ideas into reality that generate further growth.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn and progress, and for all the incredible people who’ve supported me along the way - family, friends, colleagues, clients, journalists, teachers, professors and more.
If you're curious about the full story (and maybe you’ll find some parallels or inspiration in your own path), the University of Sunshine Coast (UniSC) kindly shared this article.
Also, the Good Universities Guide ratings for 2025, which ranks 42 Australian unis, has just come out and it comes as no surprise to me that UniSC has consistently been in the Top 8 nationally for teaching quality, educational experience, learning resources, skills development, and student support. I’ve done a lot of uni study over the years and UniSC has, hands down, been the best experience to date.
We all have the chance to learn and evolve - how lucky is that? Let's make the most of it - viva la evolution!

Bec Brown lost a close friend to su***de when he was in his 20s – a tragedy that has in part led to learn more about mental health and neuroscience to help others who may be suffering.
