⏳ How can you tell if your website is loading slowly?

🚨 You can’t rely on what you see when you load up your own website normally!

👀 When you load your own site, you’re probably seeing a cached version that’s faster than what your visitors experience (especially first-timers). Sneaky, right?

And if your clients are dotted around the globe? 🌍
Latency can slow things right down—think of your website files taking the long-haul flight from your server to their screen. 🛫🧳⏱

So how do you actually check your website’s speed? Here are two quick ways:

1️⃣ The quick-and-easy way: Open an Incognito (or Private) browser window and pop in your site’s URL. This gives you a feel for how your site loads for someone nearby—aka no cached shortcuts. 🏡

2️⃣ The more accurate, global way: Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights or GTmetrix to test load times from other locations. Total game changer. 🌏

⏳ How long do you wait for a website to load before giving up?

If it’s more than 3 seconds, you’re one of the patient ones - most visitors leave after just 2-3 seconds!

A study by skilled.co found that pages that loaded in 2.4 seconds had a 1.9% conversion rate. When page load time increased to 4.2 seconds seconds, the conversion rate halved to less than 1% 😫

Amazon found that every 0.1 seconds in slower page load time cost them 1% in sales 😱

And Google found that 53% of people will leave a mobile site if it takes more than 3 seconds to load 😮

🍿🍿 So there's been a bit of drama... 👀👀

A major player in the WordPress ecosystem, WPEngine, has initiated legal action against WordPress.org and have subsequently been banned from wordpress.org 😮

That means that people who have their websites hosted with WPEngine are currently unable to access the wordpress.org plugin repository.

That means no adding new plugins and no updating plugins via the wp admin screen.

If you're with WPEngine, don't despair just yet! You can still download plugins directly from the repository and upload them manually to your website. Hit me up if you need help with that.

My advice if your website is hosted with WPEngine? Hang tight with WPEngine for now, see how it plays out over the next few days and then make a decision about what to do next.
