‘Social media marketing is about sociology and psychology more than technology'

In 2007 Brian Solis was quoted saying the statement that is the title of this post in an article he wrote. In the artilce Solis argued that in order to understand how the social media and digital marketing space works we need to remember why it works. He suggested that instead of over estimating the impact of digital and social media marketing, marketers needed to remember that social and digital marketing are simply tools connecting marketers to people through social media, in order to create long term relationships with people, influencers (sometimes) and better understand algorithms.

Mr Solis urged marketers to remember that just because a new tool that can assist in reaching more people becomes popular, does not mean it will work for your brand. The marketing legend then gave an example of how since messaging people on social media became introduced he had witness several brands trying to start conversations with their followers, only to annoy and frustrate their desired customer.

We thoroughly enjoyed this article because it shared a much more conservative take on social and digital than is secularly being promoted. Here were our key takeaways:

1. Digital and social media marketing a tool to connect with people
2. Just because a new tool becomes available doesn’t mean it will work for you or your clients
3. The future of communications is already upon us

Social media and lawyers 🤔

The days of exclusively relying on WOM for generating business are behind us.

Today, the proliferation of social media has significantly changed the landscape in which all industries operate – Digital Revere’s specialisation lies with the impact this has had on legal professionals.

Undoubtedly, tech-savvy legal firms and lawyers who are quick to adapt to new technologies will have major strides in retaining and generating further business. On the other hand, those lawyers who remain reluctant and set in their traditional ways are likely to face significant pressures from their technically advanced competitors.

We’ve outlined the ways lawyers can leverage the power of social media to stay ahead of the game, check it out here:

Why Social Media Engagement Does Not Equal Revenue 🙅

For many marketers, social media engagement is one of the easiest ways to measure the effectiveness of their content.

In simple terms, social media engagement can be defined as the number of likes, shares, comments, and mentions your content gets. Or how well your business is doing at building a relationship with your audience.

However recent studies have shown that increasing interaction may backfire.

One such example is Airbnb. A study by Compete showed that even though Airbnb had 70-80% more pages per visit than Hotels.com and Booking.com, they did not have the highest revenue.

Proving that engagement does not always result in high conversions.

In the Compete study, Booking.com had the highest revenue because they had more social proof through reviews and less interactivity on their website.

So even though engagement is a good vanity matrix, it is not the best indicator of whether people are going to actually purchase your product or use your service.

The biggest takeaway from this is that there is no single way to use social media effectively. In order to define your success on social, you must first break down the "why" of your presence. Understanding this will inform the degree in which you weigh engagement compared with other factors, and how much you're willing to invest in your engagement campaigns.

Overcoming Facebook's Algorithm 👏

‘You can’t build a business around the Facebook algorithm because you don’t know when it is going to change’ – David Chavern, President of News Media Alliance

So... how can you stay ahead of the changes that the algorithm brings?

1. Quality content 🌟

Facebook’s VP of News Feed, Adam Moseri has pointed out that the latest algorithm is meant to value high-quality content across Facebook as long as it accommodates meaningful interactions’.

Meaningful interactions being:

✔️Comments or replies
✔️Shares
✔️Likes or reactions

2. Strategically boost posts 🔥

Posts that have momentum organically will be favoured by FB's algorithm - so be selective with content that you promote!

3. Avoid clickbait 🙅

All the ‘like if’, ‘share if’, ‘react if’ or ‘tag if’ content is also click bait and does not add value to the users - and the FB God's will banish you if you decide to post it!

4. Track your content performance

After posting content, remember to use Facebook Insights to track the performance of your content. This will help you understand which content the algorithm values over the one that is not effective.

EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT.
