Last week, a local business reached out to us in a panic.
Their previous provider had locked them out of their website and other systems, even though all payments were up to date. The domain was secured thanks to their new IT provider, but the website was taken down completely.
They had no access. No backups. No files.
We had to use the Wayback Machine (yes, the internet archive!) to retrieve what we could and rebuild their site. Thankfully, we got the full site back online within a few days.
This is a critical reminder:
- Business owners must have control of their own domain name, website and website hosting.
- It doesn’t matter how trusted your provider is - if your name isn't on the domain registration or your credentials don’t work, you're at risk.
👉 Always ensure:
- You’re listed as the registrant of your domain
- You have the current login details for your domain registrar, website and website hosting
- You keep backups of your site and content
It’s your brand. Your business.
Don’t let someone else hold the keys.
