To understand how Chinese attitudes to foreign study are evolving, you need first to recognise why Chinese students study overseas.

Historically, there have been many reasons why Chinese students seek an education in foreign countries. However, the hyper-competitive schooling system has remained a key factor. Within China, the National College Entrance Examination — or “gaokao” — is the sole gatekeeper for top-tier domestic universities. Students who underperform in the gaokao lose access to China’s most prestigious universities. International study can provide a second chance at a well-regarded qualification for these students.

Increasingly, secondary school students and their parents are planning years in advance for a foreign undergraduate education. By doing so, they ease the looming pressure of the gaokao, which would otherwise provide the only route to a premium higher education.

Other contributing forces need to be considered. China’s economy has shown resilient growth through COVID. In addition, its 18-year-old population — key to undergraduate enrolment numbers — has started to climb again following a sharp decline in 2006.

A new generation of Chinese international students is coming. However, to meet them, you need to be in the market now.
