👉 Step 2: Set a timer for 5 seconds
👉 Step 3: Look at your screen like a new visitor

Now ask yourself:
“Do I immediately understand what this business does?”

If not, that’s your starting point.

Fix it by:
– Swapping vague headlines for clear ones
– Removing clutter from your top section
– Adding one obvious next step

Sometimes, a business doesn’t have a marketing problem; it has a website experience problem.

People make snap decisions online,​ and if a site feels confusing, cluttered, or hard to navigate, they'll bounce (they'll make like a tree and leave).

Today is a GREAT day! The website I have been building with gorgeous human and bestselling author, Fleur McDonald, IS LIVE!

We focused on easy navigation, usability and making sure all her books had a place to shine. As well as getting her shop back up and running, as well as her incredible online writing course.

When I was first talking to Fleur about her website, I was basically BUZZING as I could see so many opportunities for her. Now, as I work with the SEO gods to get things happening.

Size matters.
On website images, I mean. Get your mind out of the gutter 😌

One of the quickest ways to accidentally slow down a beautiful site is uploading images that are wayyy too big.

A few common things I see all the time:

• Uploading a 4000px photo to display as a tiny thumbnail
• Using PNGs instead of JPGs
• Letting images quietly bloat your load speed

A good rule of thumb:

✨ Check the width of the image you're uploading. Does it need to be that big? Probably not.
✨ Keep files ideally under 250KB
✨ Use JPGs for images, PNG only when you truly need transparency

Your site should feel fast, calm, and polished… not like it’s dragging its bum!

I sat down to write a post about SEO, and this lyric popped into my head.

‘𝘈 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘢 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘸𝘰
𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘺 𝘴𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺'𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘰’

It's from John Lennon's song, 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘋𝘰 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘚𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱 (from the Imagine album). ​It's a searing attack at our beloved Macca. ​Look, they loved each other like brothers, and 1971 was a raw time for them​ both. BUT Beatle dorking aside (I heart The Beatles 4eva), it's true for websites.

I know it's so exciting to look at all the design aspects, animations, colours, fonts, etc when you're building your website. And you're RIGHT to be excited about all that. ​That is exciting!

But if your web designer is not talking to you about SEO at this stage, I would chuck a runner.

​They should also be talking to you about:

- Suggested keywords you could be going for
- On-page SEO (if you have a site already). If not, this should be part of the foundation your site is built on
- Google My Business (if applicable)
- Google Search Console

Otherwise, it's a pretty little husk. A shell that looks pretty, but nothing is inside.

SEO is the guts that does the work for you.
