Tilt by Jen Mize & the Rough n’ Tumble; Pathfinder Records
This second album by US-born, Queensland-based singer extraordinaire Jen Mize and the seven-piece Rough n’ Tumble consolidates an auspicious 2023 debut with another 10 tracks of scintillating blues-rock, southern Americana, soul and gospel-tinged balladry. Mize, whose wildly eclectic CV includes stints as a backing vocalist with former Supreme Mary Wilson, Canadian jazzer Michael Bublé and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, had a hand in penning most of Tilt (including the horn charts), with bandmates Jeremy Edwards (guitarist/co-producer) and drummer Steve Fearnley featured co-writers. Edwards also duets with Mize on Double Talk and Moneymaker, the former a cautionary tale about silver-tongued devils, the latter a celebration of veteran Californian roots band Little Feat in the allegorical guise of the Rough n’ Tumble. There’s also a nod to Sheryl Crow on the gospel-rap Greater Good, again featuring Edwards, but it’s the torch songs on Tilt that mark Mize as a singular vocal talent. Cellophane, a rumination on interpersonal transparency, is the centrepiece, with jazz-funk finale The Great Escape – led by clavinet, muted trumpet, wah-wah guitar and Zac Watson’s bass – a close second. The soulful Holy Moly revisits Mize’s past life as an evangelical singer, while the more secular Work On Me has her reading the riot act to a prospective suitor. Either way, you’re convinced.
