National tourism modelling estimates the proposed changes could result in a $566 million reduction in visitor expenditure nationally.

Regional businesses need certainty and access to the workforce they rely on.

This week, we’re recognising long-standing Townsville Enterprise member Glencore and its contribution to North Queensland’s resources and processing sector.

Glencore’s Townsville copper refinery plays an important role in the regional supply chain, refining copper anodes into high-purity copper cathode used in products including electrical wire and cabling. The refinery can produce up to 300,000 tonnes of 99.995% pure copper cathode each year.

Glencore’s North Queensland metals operations also support significant employment and economic activity across the region, including direct and indirect jobs in Townsville.

A Townsville Enterprise member since 1991, Glencore Copper has been part of our network for more than three decades, contributing to regional industry, employment and long-term economic activity.

Proposed changes to the Working Holiday Maker visa program are causing real concern for tourism and hospitality businesses across Townsville North Queensland.

From bar staff and tour guides to the workers helping supply the food on our tables, Working Holiday Makers play an important role in keeping our visitor economy moving.

They’re also visitors - staying in our hostels, spending in our venues and experiencing the best of our region.

Reducing their numbers, length of stay or mobility would hurt businesses and visitor experiences. We are asking government to protect Working Holidays and consult tourism before making changes.
