Outback Opals Winton Qld

Outback Opals Winton Qld Our family’s opal mining story began with our father, John P. Jackson, in 1964. We spent a few years there and that's when we all got the opal bug.

Today, the tradition continues with Bruce, Ray, John, Narelle and Steve, who proudly mine in the Opalton, Vergemont, and Elvo fields, near Winton.” Opal Mining all began with our father John P Jackson in 1960 when he was working on properties in the Eromanga area. Dad and mum moved to Winton in 1964 when dad started mining for opal in his spare time. Around 1966 dad went mining full time at the Mi

nnirichie Mine on Elvo Station, chasing crystal opal. Dad continued chasing opal for the rest of his life working for Eric Lenton. He worked many years with Eric at Opalton, Mayneside and Chiltern Hills mining fields. Bruce Ray and John Jnr, along with my husband Steve and myself, started hand mining at Opalton. It was there they purchased their first Backhoe and then moved to Carbine. Ray purchased an Excavator and Bruce purchased a Bulldozer and our family continue to mine at Opalton, Veregemont and Elvo mining fields.

MINARITCHIE 💙💚

We’ve named this 1.23 carat natural Boulder Opal, Minaritchie, after John P. Jackson’s first opal claim — the place where John took the leap into hand mining full-time.

It was home to the whole family, living simply in the bush with just a caravan. John, Jacqui and the little kids, John Jnr and Narelle, slept in the caravan, while the bigger boys, Bruce and Ray, slept in a shed John built.

And the connection continues today — John Jnr and his partner Deb still have a camp at Minaritchie, making this name a very special link between the family's first days of opal mining and the generation carrying that passion forward today.

The stone itself is freeform with a concave face. Deep blue and violet tones provide the backdrop for flashes of electric green and vivid blue.

A little stone with a story that runs deep. 💚💙

Electric Faultline ⚡

This little Winton boulder opal may be only 9mm long and 1.57 carats, but it packs an incredible display of colour. A full face flash of vivid green dances across the stone, with electric blue shimmering beneath the surface.

What makes this opal really cool is the natural line running through the stone — a feature often called a natural seam in boulder opal — which continues right through to the back, telling the story of how this gem formed over millions of years in the Queensland outback.

Cut into a freeform triangular shape, this piece has a bold, modern look and would make a beautiful feature stone for the hobby jeweller.

✨ A Beautiful Winton Boulder Opal ✨

What a stunning piece! 💎

This boulder opal displays an incredible mix of electric blue, vibrant green and soft golden-yellow colour, with flashes of colour dancing across the stone as it catches the light. Not yet cut or polished, this stone is part of a parcel of rubs.

The natural ironstone inclusions create beautiful branch-like patterns through the opal, giving it a unique character that could never be duplicated.

Nature has certainly done its work on this one! 🌈💚💙

💙 Jacqui’s Royal (Our beautiful mumma)
Thank you Kelie ❤️

Jacqui’s Royal is a 1.49 carat natural Winton boulder opal, named in honour of Jacqui, who, along with John were the very first generation of opal miners in our family.

And perhaps fittingly, this little beauty shows off a gorgeous royal blue (she is our English Rose after all), with flashes of aqua dancing across the face.

A smoky line of natural potch runs through the stone, peppered with fine ironstone, adding depth and character.

Finished with a beautifully rounded, domed freeform shape. We can picture this one looking fantastic in a claw or prong-style setting, where the colour around the edges can remain visible and become part of the design rather than being hidden beneath a bezel.

A little piece of Winton colour carrying a little piece of our family’s opal history.

Opal mining life is a way of life like no other. It’s hard work, long days and plenty of challenges, but it comes with the excitement of never knowing what might be waiting beneath the ground.

Out in the Winton/Opalton opal fields, miners work in some of Australia’s harshest country, dealing with heat, dust, machinery breakdowns and the uncertainty of whether the next bucket of dirt will produce anything. Life can mean living in camps, fixing machinery, working underground like my father or in open cuts, and relying on your own skills and experience to keep things moving.

But there is something special about it. The friendships, the freedom of the bush, the satisfaction of finding a beautiful piece of boulder opal and the knowledge that you are continuing a tradition passed down through generations make all the hard work worthwhile.
