We don’t usually talk much about the things South Break Media supports financially.
But this one mattered to us.
When Kiama Municipal Council asked local businesses and organisations to help bring the New Year’s Eve fireworks back, we decided to contribute $5000.
Why?
Because events like this matter to a town.
They bring people together. They give families something to look forward to. They support local businesses. And in Kiama’s case, New Year’s Eve around the harbour has become part of the rhythm of the place.
We also liked the model.
Council was upfront that it couldn’t fund the event alone, committed $20,000 and asked the broader business community to help make up the difference.
That target has now been reached.
We’re proud South Break could play a small part alongside Traders in Purple, Kiama Business Network, Cedar on Collins, The Sebel Kiama, One Fitness 24/7, Jamberoo Action Park, Tiny Tins, McMahon’s Transport, Tiny Tins and the many other businesses and organisations that got behind it.
Sometimes supporting a community means doing more than helping tell its stories.
Sometimes you chip in as well.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮. 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗧𝗘𝗗𝘅 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀. 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀.

We've had the privilege of working alongside two incredible clients as they prepared for one of the biggest communication opportunities of their careers.

Last year, Dr Meghan Dares from Joint Vision Orthopaedic Group stepped onto the TEDxWollongong stage to challenge how we think about ageing, movement and healthspan.

And Dr Greg Ryder from Sicona Battery Technologies tackled one of the hidden challenges behind the AI revolution, asking a simple but powerful question: What if AI's biggest problem isn't software... but heat?

Both talks have now been selected as TEDx Editors' Picks, giving them global exposure far beyond the room where they were first delivered.

What many people don't see is everything that happens before someone walks onto that red dot.

From shaping the core idea and refining the narrative, to rehearsals, presentation coaching, media strategy and the content campaign that follows ... we've been fortunate to walk alongside both Meghan and Greg at every stage of the journey.

Watching them grow as speakers and seeing their ideas reach a worldwide audience has been incredibly rewarding.

One of the things I love most about journalism is discovering that the story is rarely the one you think it is.
On the surface, this looked like a story about two basketballers playing for the Illawarra Hawks.
It turned out to be a story about taking a chance, moving across the world, finding community and building a life in a place neither of them ever expected to call home.
And, admittedly, a cavoodle named Teddy who may now have his own fan club (of which I'm a ticketholder).
A reminder that the best stories are often hiding in plain sight.

Proud to see Hard Work: The Illawarra Hawks Story officially move into post-production.
Over the past 12 months, the team at Films and Relativity Films have captured more than 70 hours of interviews and stories documenting the history, resilience and identity of the Illawarra Hawks Basketball, the NBL’s only remaining foundation club.
We’re also excited to see a major streaming platform formally express interest in the documentary, highlighting the global appeal of authentic regional storytelling.
At South Break Media, we’ve been proud to support the project through strategic communications and storytelling support alongside a passionate creative team determined to do this story justice.
This is more than a basketball documentary. It’s a story about community, survival and what the Hawks mean to generations across the Illawarra.

The Illawarra Hawks Basketball story is heading towards the big screen.
After six months of filming and more than 70 hours of interviews, Hard Work: The Illawarra Hawks Story is now officially in post-production and a major international streaming platform has expressed interest in distributing the documentary.
From the Snakepit to the championship, this film captures 47 years of grit, resilience and community surrounding the NBL’s only remaining foundation club.
This project has only been possible because of the support of players, staff, fans and the wider Illawarra community.
Thank you to everyone who has shared their stories with us so far.

Season one with Sydney Kings almost seems a dream. Helluva ride and a championship at the end. Today a new ride begins with some new faces, but the same thirst and desire. It's been a short offseason but it's felt like forever. We've drafted a key recruit in Courtney Ward and already Abigail Isip, Michael Johnstone Isabella Schiff, Sam Tolhurst and the team at TSE have been hard at work making sure there will again be plenty of bums on seats and eyeballs on screens.
