Location: Palm Beach, NSW, Australia
Year: 1954
Architect: Peter Muller

Peter Muller, one of Australia’s most highly regarded and innovative architects, designed this Palm Beach house in 1954 for his own family. It was here that he first directly used the surroundings as a starting point for the design, an approach for which he has since become renowned. The bush site, which has exceptional and uninterrupted views to Pittwater, had an influence on the entire form of the building; however, the most unexpected feature of the three-bedroomed house, and one that is visible from the front door, is the wonderfully dramatic rock formation incorporated into the sitting room. Echoes of Frank Lloyd Wright are seen in the brick building’s long, low form, cantilevered eaves and stepped ceiling and roofline, but above all, this is a particularly liveable house, with its flexible use of space including a spectacularly positioned master bedroom

• MID CENTURY MARVEL • by

We’re loving the concept drawings approach with the white highlights to give me impact to each part of the design elements. We also appreciate a sense of deep richness in the palette of Rubys work.

‘Buttery yellows, tans & browns with a splash of baby blue. Nothing really says a mid-century combo like these three colours mixed together. Besides having a sweeping stainless island bench with suspended overhead cupboards!’

‘Textures of browns, yellows & taupes mixed with baby blue highlights. Buttery stone for those luxury moments complemented by chrome dashes and patterns splashes. Sculpted from the terracotta tiles a stainless steel island bench takes centre stage. Designed at the ideal height to place your feet while you watch your loved one cook. Contrasting marble adds a contemporary twist. The classic suspended overhead cupboards sit with textured amber glass and the delicious walnut Burl. The stainless steel bench boasts built in sink with drainage integrated into the steel, yum much! And let’s not forget about our buttery stone splashback with a mere little 20mm edge detail.’

‘A classic with a twist of contemporary. It’s by no means perfect, there could be MANY hours spent perfecting this design. But it’s not meant to be work, it’s just to throw ideas down & live in a world where budgets don’t exist and imaginations flourishes.’

‘Here the structural V gutter supports the rafters of the carport while also guiding the entry procession via colonnade to the midpoint of the house. The intention was to increase circulation efficiency and keep costs down in the linear plan.’

‘What a stunning space this is - lovingly reconfigured and designed by - refreshed whilst nodding to the original design features that Denys Lasdun incorporated into this brutalist building.’

Designed by Denys Lasdun and completed in 1976, the National Theatre is one of London’s best-known Brutalist buildings.
