FUN FACT: MARRIAGE IS GOOD! This week will complete a run of 12 years of marriage for my husband and I. What advice would I give to someone now starting out?
1. Follow the prescription of God's Word like the fruitfulness of your marriage depends on it. Because it does.
2.Daily commit your way (attitudes, thoughts, responses and behaviour) to the Lord. Believe me when I say that none of us knows what we are doing. Thankfully, God does.
3. Your spouse is not a role. They are a person with a childhood, experiences, triggers and nuances that must be learnt and handled with grace, patience and wisdom. Love them for who they actually are not the idea of who you would like them to be. And pray that God will make both of you who He would have you to be.
4. Marriage is not for the purpose of making another, or yourself, happy. People were never meant to be your source of happiness, strength, joy or hope. That is a role God is meant to fill. True joy comes when both spouses learn how to serve one another selflessly, without expecting anything in return, and both learn how to yield to the Lord.
